Kataklysm Controls the Arms of Devastation by Jeremy Brackeen (Cameron, WI United States) 5 Stars
March 27, 2008
In my honest opinion, Kataklysm may not the greatest band in the death metal genre nor the most well known, but they have definately been one of my favorite death metal bands to listen to lately. These guys do a great all around solid job at making fast, brutal, unrelenting music that will kick you straight in the teeth, and I applaud them for that. They also have a unique style that combines sharp brutal techicality with songwriting that is distinct in a genre that knows only too well the definition of tedium. I first got into Kataklysm about two years ago when I purchased 2004's "Serenity in Fire" and 2006's "In the Arms of Devastation". While I do enjoy "Serenity in Fire" alot, I find "In the Arms of Devastation" to be much more heavier, faster, and all around better album, in fact it's also the band's best album in their career thus far in my opinion. I still need to check into some of their earlier stuff too. The producition on ITAOD is just deep, mature, intense and just flat out awesome. Not to mention that the musicianship is just top notch on here. Maurizio Iacono's vocals can range from deep, powerful, raging death growls and killer high pitched screams, and believe me, he can definately growl and scream with the best of them. Jean Francois Dagenais's guitar riffs are just sharp and crushingly heavy. He's also very adapt at making transitions from blisteringly fast shredding to a slower, chunkier crushing style. My only complaint is that I wish that he would play more solos, because I think he's absolutely capable of doing that so. The one thing that really amazes me the most about Kataklysm is the drumming courtesy of Max Duhammel. I mean his style is just absolutely inhuman. His machine-gun-like self-dubbed "hyperblast" beats are just frantic, yet perfectly calculated and wickedly fast and not to mention that he also does a great job with his double bass kicks too. Opening up "In the Arms of Devastation" is "Like Angels Weeping (The Dark)" which starts off with some television/movie quotation which is soon followed by some tremelo-picked melodies, then by crushing, headbanging-induced riffing and fast straight ahead thrashing double bass drumming. There's also a nice sweeping harmony lead around the 1:51 mark as well. Next up, we have the fierce and savage "Let Them Burn" which is a personal favorite of mine that features even more faster pounding drums and wild savage riffing, and a chorus that is just fierce and ruthless. It's definately one of the best choruses I've ever heard on a death metal recording, while the third track "Crippled and Broken" slows the album down a bit with some slower, yet muscular churning riffs, and there's also some fast tempos as well as great growling vocals. "To Reign Again" is another favorite of mine that features great chugging riffs that are downright massive. Track six "Open Scars" is another fast, scathing, ruthless song that contains some of the best riffs on the album, and there's also a nice guitar solo as well as some fast crazy double bass drumwork especially during the chorus. This song has definately got to be one of the band's best songs in my book. The final song "The Road to Devastation" is an amazing epic mid tempo album closer and another favorite of mine as well. This song also features two great special guests in Into Eternity's vocalist Rob Doherty and lead guitarist Tim Roth. I like when Rob and Maurizio trade off vocals during the choruses where Rob does the low deep death growls and Maurizio does the high pitched screams. I also like when drummer Max Duhammel goes into some great double bass kicking during the choruses and some trademark machine-gun "hyperblast" beats after. The guitar solo by Tim around the 3:40 mark is just simply awesome, whenever I hear that solo, I always like to turn up the volume on my stereo or CD player just to simply rock out to it. I also like the part where the song fades out to the sound of clock ticking, it's really cool. This song for my money is definately one of the best songs that Katakysm has ever recorded. Jeremy's song ratings: 1. Like Angels Weeping (The Dark) (4:27) - 5/5 2. Let Them Burn (3:19) - 5/5 3. Crippled and Broken (4:32) - 5/5 4. To Reign Again (4:25) - 5/5 5. It Turns to Rust (4:04) - 5/5 6. Open Scars (4:06) - 5/5 7. Temptation's Nest (3:46) - 5/5 8. In Words of Desperation (5:10) - 5/5 9. The Road to Devastation (7:14) - 5/5 Overall, this album is definately an absolute must have for fans not only of death metal, but extreme heavy music in general. Buy this album now!! Kataklysm takes no prisoners with this album. they have gotten faster since 2K4's "Serenity In Fire". what will 2007 bring for this band? I believe that they are sending every Death Metal band a message. (stay brutal). this is an excellent album for Death Metal veterans to listen to.

Kataklysm is another band that is not recognized enough. What can I say, killer double bass, low-deep growling vocals, guitar riffs that will rip you in half. Need I say more? Check it out.

zzzzzzzzzz.......oh sorry, this album is putting me to sleep. Everything cheesey they've done in the past has been rolled up into one neat, tight package. This has got to be one of the most boring albums I have ever got. Its all cut and paste and devoid of atmosphere or life. Ok, so you have jackhammer stop and go drums, insane technical guitar solos, and deep, throaty growls. But so did Suffocation, and there new album is a million times better then this. Overall, people new to the death metal scene, or those who avoid death metal's golden past will love this. Everyone else, will not. Avoid.

One of the better albums by T. Bradley 5 Stars

While this album did not have the earth shattering effect as Serenity in Fire did on me - Kataklysm continues to deliver a heaping host of pure hatred in this realease. A long time listener of most death metal genre - many bands have become a tired regurgitation of each predicessor. Not these guys - while some of the earlier realeases were a dissapointment Devestation pleased the ear of many a critical commrades - including many a folk down at Mosh Pit records - a local host to the non-divine sounds. The album is composed quite well without a single track that I skip. I make sure to drive by Focus on the Family whenever I can with the windows down and the volume blaring!
