CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.5 based on 17 reviews)
| great music-bad engineering by Allan K. Betz (Ogden, Utah, USA) 2 Stars June 29, 2009 The engineers at Sony have used the finest technology available today to ruin some of the best recordings of some of the best performances of some of the best music ever written.Across all twelve disks there is a piercing digital distortion in the mid-frequency range. Between about 2,000 and 8,000 cycles per second a nasty ring comes out and bites your ears off. it is so bad that some notes jump right out of the mix as if their volume were twice that of notes in other ranges. this is a real heart-break to me as I love these recordings. I do believe they represent the finest achievement of Murray Perahia's career. If you have the ability to re-equalize these recordings the offending frequencies can be lowered and this will make the listening tolerable. One should never have to do this. i believe that Sony is contributing to the disabled of Japan by hiring only deaf engineers.
| | utterly the most beautiful, meltingly gorgeous mozart piano concertos by P. Dave (Columbus, OH) 5 Stars March 16, 2009 Listen to these mozart piano concertos. They will move you and pull on your heart like no other version of mozart's piano concertos. listen for example to the adagio in mozart concerto no. 7 (lodron). before this, i was someone who only listened to mozart's 'great piano concertos'...after having listened to all of them now, i know what i was missing! they are soooo beautiful. i feel blessed to have discovered these. i am writing this review so that others can also experience this joy.
| | Perahia is a brilliant Mozart interpeter by JfromJersey (Manalapan, NJ) 5 Stars January 22, 2009 My 3 favorite interpreters of Mozart on the piano are Perahia, Curzon, and Brendel, and Perahia, maybe a bit more than the others. This set is simply wonderful. These remastered concertos really bring out the crispness, and clarity of Perahia's style, which I think overall, is a nice blend of technique and emotional depth. In this compilation, the interplay of the piano with the English Chamber Orchestra is beautifully realized.
Beside the operas, if anything destroys the impression of Mozart's music being light and lovely, but shallow, it's his piano concertos, beginning with the marvelous K.271, and ending with K.595 written in the last year of his life (1791). A greater representation of thematic originality, formal beauty, and depth of feeling, can't be found. Mozart perfected the classical form to the point where Beethoven, realizing that he couldn't surpass him, had to break new ground to make his mark. My favorites are K.271, K.453, K.466, K.482, and K.491, respectively numbers 9, 17, 20, 22, and 24. For Mozart lovers in general, the list of favorites will vary, since we are dealing with at minimum, a dozen genuine masterpieces.
| | Breathtaking- This is the one to buy by Robert B. Meeker (Chicago) 5 Stars November 10, 2008 I have listened to the dozen cds in this set multiple times and keep coming back to them. I have also read the other reviewers of this set and agree with all of the super positive ones. Mozart fans -This is the one to buy.
| | I'll make this short and sweet by Robert D. Hoover 5 Stars November 02, 2008 I bought this boxed set about 3 months ago, and I keep going back to it....
In short,THIS IS THE ONE TO BUY. What Murray Perahia and the English Chamber Orchestra have accomplished with Mozart's work is astonishing. This is what "they" mean when they say that the music has "come off the page." Superlatives fail to convey the wonderous result. This is ensemble playing at it's best.
