EDITORIAL REVIEWS

Album Description
H.P. Lovecraft meets Devo on Ataxia, Circus Devils' new collection of moonshine revelries and musical trips by torchlight into the mist-shrouded fields and forests of Ohio (aka: land of mystery). Robert Pollard and the Tobias brothers treat the listener to an intoxicating blend of jagged, insistent rock and uneasy lullabies.

Circus Devils are Real by Michael J. White (Cincinnati, OH USA) 5 Stars
November 17, 2008
Saying the Circus Devils are experimental rock, compared to the usually pop inspired collaborations of Robert Pollard and Todd Tobias, may not do this record enough justice. This is a solid effort at Psychedelic/Progressive pop music. Ataxia is approachable in ways that the prior release Sgt. Disco was, while being comparable to The Harold Pig Memorial from 2002 in both the excellence of music and lyrical content. There are some hits here and they should be expected to make a future set list of an Uncle Bob show coming to a town near you (if you live in the mid-west USA). It gets better with each play and high volume is recommended. Rat Faced Ballerina sounds like old GbV to this fan.

Planets Are Blasted
by Boston Spaceships

Following a four-star review in Mojo and a successful whirlwind US tour, Boston Spaceships return to Earth just five months later with their sophomore album!

Chris Slusarenko (Guided By Voices, Sprinkler) and John Moen (Decemberists, Elliott Smith) have never been so impressive. Robert Pollard himself was sequestered in Dayton, Ohio for nearly two years without touring, concentrating on his songwriting and artwork. The trio's efforts are readily apparent on The Planets Are...

The Crawling Distance

The Crawling Distance
by Robert Pollard

2009 solo release from the prolific Alternative singer/songwriter and former leader of Guided By Voices. From the stately Krautrock chug of the album opener, 'Faking My Harlequin', to the schizo-frenetic closing track, 'Too Much Fun', with its structural U-turns piled on top of tempo shifts, The Crawling Distance is unlike any Pollard release yet. 10 tracks.

Brown Submarine

Brown Submarine
by Boston Spaceships

Though one will notice some subtle prog flourishes and acoustic strums, Brown Submarines is a pop punk album, made by and for kids who've worn out the grooves on their Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper, Wire, and dBs records. While Robert Pollard has stretched out post-GBV, experimenting on each of his diverse and unique solo records, Boston Spaceships rock hard, have fun, and drink Miller Lite. Without undue hyperbole, Pollard is penning fantastic pop songs in a style no longer fashionable--perhaps...

Gringo

Gringo
by Circus Devils

2009 release. The Circus Devils prove that accessibility and experimentation can go hand in hand on Gringo, an acoustic song cycle with a 1970s Morricone-esque Southwestern flavor. You can almost smell the sage brush and gasoline on every track.

Sgt. Disco

Sgt. Disco
by Circus Devils

Circus Devils Sgt. Disco

In 2001, Robert Pollard and the brothers Tobias formed Circus Devils and veered off the pop highway and straight into a deep hole, where they mingled with nursery rhyme characters of the future, invisible present-day villains and heroes, and the ghosts of rock-and-roll past. The band's strange journey culminates in the appearance of Sgt. Disco, their first worldwide release on the Ipecac label. Circus Devils incorporates a musical alchemy of hard rock and soft...
