Album Description
Universally hailed as a masterpiece, Soul Mass Transit represents, among other things, a decade and a half of gradual recovery for Jude Rawlins. During the hiatus that followed Mona Lisa, there was much anticipation and hope that, eventually, his desire to write songs would coincide with a desire to perform them live, and manifest as such in the kind of album that we always believed he had in him. And, with the continued faith and support of his fellow Subterraneans, it did exactly that. Soul Mass Transit is an album of such depth and feeling that is scarcely ever heard these days. It is a truly remarkable, truly English guitar album. Musically, Subterraneans have long appeared to be their own biggest influence, and this was certainly not an album made with any commercial agenda of any kind. That said, Soul Mass Transit does have an agenda, an artistic, political and emotional one. The songs are clearly personal, and the performances deeply emotive and dramatic, but without ever spilling over into melodrama.
