CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.5 based on 251 reviews)
| Very good for an amateur by S. Singh 5 Stars November 28, 2009 This camera is good for an amateur like me. It has a good balance of cost, features and portability. The main reason for buying this was portability. I own a camera that takes much better pictures thank this one, but is pretty bulky. I was looking for something that took decent pictures and was more portable. So far I am pretty happy with the picture quality. The pictures in bright day light are just great. However, it is challenging to get good pictures outdoors at night. All in all I am happy with my purchase.
| | Seems like the best out there for under $200!! by Jill (VA) 5 Stars November 27, 2009 While I have only had my camera a couple of hours, I have logged in many (some may say too many) hours of internet research to find the best small digital camera under $[...] and think I have found it!! I had a Kodak DX7360 and loved it, but it is clunky, and then didn't survive a night out in the rain on Halloween. Oops! As much as I loved my old Kodak, I have been scared off of purchasing a new Kodak since many many reviews said the pictures were not clear, the shutter time seemed too slow, and that they seemed to just stop working altogether in a matter of months. Seemed like these were similar complaints of Nikon Coolpix, Sony Cybershots, Samsungs and Olympus.
My final options were this Canon SD1200, an Olympus Stylus 7010, Casio Ex-S5 and Casio EXZ33. What really sold me on the Canon SD1200 was the fact that I found awesome reviews from expert websites:
[...] - it made the Dave's Picks list
[...] - "strong buy" (the highest rating) (Olypus 7010 was only "good buy.")
[...] - rated the Best Ultra Compact Digital Camera under $200
[...] - rated an A.
Like most people, I didn't want to buy any camera without actually testing it out. I tested it out at Best Buy, got a few quick pics of my 4 yr old and was totally sold! The camera took crisp pictures immediately. Crisp and quick were my main objectives since I pretty much only take pictures of my 2 and 4 yr old boys who are always on the go! : )
I don't know about technical details of zoom, digital/optical etc, but was able to shoot a quick, clear image little video of my dog and was able to zoom while recording. A lot of other point and shoot cameras do not have the zoom while recording feature.
I didn't actually buy this camera from Amazon.com. I still wanted to submit a review though since I've pored over the many reviews on this site for this camera and the others I researched. I ended up buying it in person today for the same price at Best Buy(Black Friday)and purchased the Geek Squad Black Tie 2 yr warranty. Although after all the great things I've heard about the Canon SD1200, the $35 Best Buy protection plan will cover pretty much anything short of actually losing the camera...even if it gets left out in the rain next Halloween. : )
I'll add to my review in the future if my opinion changes, but so far, this seems like the best quality, easy-to-use, quick and crisp picture taking camera for the money.
| | Much better than my previous Nikon Coolpix! by Hoppaguy 5 Stars November 27, 2009 I needed a replacement for my Nikon Coolpix point and shoot because I was getting annoyed with the blurry pictures. I bought the Nikon about 2 years ago because of its smaller footprint than the Canon point and shoots. However over the last 2 years, I have been fairly disappointed with the picture quality. Therefore I was looking around and after reading the reviews, I bought the 1200IS. I have been using it for about 3 weeks now and am very impressed as are other reviewers with the quality of the pictures for the price point. This is a very basic camera but it is perfect for a compact point and shoot. I would say that 5 out of 10 pictures on my old Nikon came out well. So far, I would say 8 out of 10 pictures on this Canon come out well! I would highly recommend this camera for anyone looking for a basic point and shoot that does not need some more of the advanced manual settings.
| | Not as good as expected by Nathan C. Pusey (Michigan) 2 Stars November 25, 2009 I bought this camera less than a week ago after doing a lot of research and being satisfied with prior Canon products. I love the small, lightweight design and the fact that it has a program mode which you can change the ISO setting and White Balance to get a better shot. One feature that I miss from my old Canon A80 is the ability to manually change the shutter speed (great for night photos). There is a "night snapshot" setting, but it didn't perform quite as well. Although the video is not HD quality, it seems to perform well. Contrary to some other models, you can use the zoom while recording video.
My biggest qualm with this camera is photo quality. Though I like the ability to tweek the settings, I also like the option to turn on the camera, point, shoot, and get a great picture. I am very unimpressed with the color quality in auto mode. I've tried pictures indoors and outdoors, but the pictures look very washed out. Compared to my old camera and photos taken in program mode. As it has been cloudy since I've purchased the camera, it's possible that auto mode would perform better in bright light... maybe.
Another concern is the flash. Some of the photos have dark areas, as if the flash didn't light up the object evenly.
Bottom line: If you have time to mess with the settings before each shot, you might get a good picture. If you want a great point and shoot camera, you may want to keep searching.
| | Best Camera I have ever had. by I. Black (Maryland) 5 Stars November 24, 2009 Seriously this is a great digital camera. Takes pictures at night and you can see everything. Has face recognition technology and amazing auto focus. And you look great with it.
Highly recommended. Great buy.
