compared to other brands of charcoal ive tried, the exotica brand coals are really hard to get started.. ive found the best way to get these going is to set them on top of another brand(three kings) that start much easier than the exotica brand(i use two charcoals atop the head after the exotica brand gets going, pushing the coals around the foil every few minutes.. this basically allows me to give you an accurate side by side comparison).. they also seem to burn just a bit faster than the other brand as well.. this may be due to the fact that the "other" brand is 20% larger than the exotica(6 grams and 5 grams respectively).. the "other" brand is not without its problems as well.. when ignited the three kings brand has a tendency to throw tiny sparks for a minute, until it gets going good..

I purchased this coal to go with my first hookah and overall, I'm pretty pleased with it's performance. The only thing I had a problem with was lighting it because I was unaware that you were supposed to light it on a stove. I turned the range on high and once it was red hot, I placed a coal directly onto the burner. Make sure you watch it closely because it will start to flame if it gets to hot (I learned this the hard way).
Pros:
- Lights really quickly (less than 5 minutes)
- Burns for at least 40 minutes
Cons:
- No instructions anywhere on or in the box to tell you how to light them
- As it burns, it leaves lots of ash which can be pretty messy
