Sweepers smooth the way when the stone (a 41 1/2 pound block of polished Scottish granite) is sent curling down the sheet of ice toward the "house" (the target circles). This ancient Scottish game becomes more popular in the United States every season. Besides men's and women's clubs in Wausau, there's an active group of high school curlers. Table-top curling, in the colorful and comfortable lounge of the Wausau Curling Club, gives Mr. Freytag a chance to replay a game with members from several bonspiel rinks.
