Day One - Pretty Good by droolmouth (South Dakota) 4 Stars

I just installed this today, and I have to say, I'm impressed with how far voice recognition software for the Mac has come. I've been playing with it for several years--IBM ViaVoice and iListen--and while the potential has been intriguing, the reality was always that voice recognition fell short. I understood, however, through reading David Pogue's column, that Dragon's software engine was much better in the Windows world, and was waiting for something to be ported. When I heard that MacSpeech Dictate came out, I wanted to try it, but the high price and the bad early reviews kept me from doing so. Now I'm glad I finally bought it. The training is short and easy, and the result, once you get used to speaking your punctuation, is pretty good. I'm a good speller and a decent typist, but in my job I frequently have to transcribe handwritten notes or yellowed newspaper copy, or smudged faxes that can't be OCR'ed. So I'm looking forward to simply reading the copy in, rather than having to retype it all. And after just one hour of playing with it, I am confident this software is going to save me some time. Dictation already is at least 95 percent accurate, and it promises to rise as my MacSpeech and I get to know each other better. The downsides? There are two: it's still way overpriced, compared to Naturally Speaking, and the single license is a pain in the neck. I would have dictated this review, for instance, but I'm not going to pay for another license, so the software is staying on my work computer. It seems to me there ought to be more flexibility than that; a single user owning two computers, home and work, is probably the standard today. But, that said, I'm pretty happy with it. It seems that the Jetsons' version of the future has come one step closer. (Now I'm just waiting for my robot maid.)

pretty frustrating by Lagom (Canada) 3 Stars

I bought this software for transcribing handwritten documents and interviews (I listened to the interviews and repeated the words into the microphone). Unfortunately, it was almost always faster for me to type because the program makes a LOT of mistakes. My interviews and documents have tons of proper names and uncommon older words in them though, so I think MacSpeech might work better for other kinds of dictations or transcriptions. I also find this program to be extremely buggy. It usually crashes at least once per day, even after I installed the updated version. I used MacSpeech quite a bit because my wrists were getting strain injuries from typing, but I usually just ended up getting really frustrated. Maybe with a lot of effort, I could train MacSpeech to better recognize my voice, but I'm not willing to invest more time than it would take me just to type the transcription in the first place. I admire what this program can do, but I don't think I would buy it again.

Works great right out of the box. by E. Mitchell (Eden Prairie, mn) 5 Stars

This is the first product review I have ever done either on the Apple store or for really any product at all but I felt it was important for me to write this review since I did look at the previous reviews before making my purchase and I thought that it would only be fair for me to write a review after my experience. I ordered these the software from the Amazon online store I believe I paid about $160 and it came via UPS and everything was fine in the package. I followed directions, inserted the software performed the training and everything really turned out just very well. The training took about five minutes and just simply consisted of reading a statement that was on the screen. After I was done with the training I went to my Microsoft Word for Mac application and just really began to speak into a blank document. So what is there before you is what I dictated just off the top of my head and so far I must say that I found this to be extremely easy for me to do and the dictation becomes very natural I will stop now and check to see how the spelling and grammar worked In the two paragraphs above I probably had to correct about three items that weren't precisely correct. This is very similar to the sort of correction I do when I manually type something since my typing skills are mediocre at best. So after this brief little trial I do think my initial reaction is very positive toward the software and I think it will save me a lot of time as I do not enjoy typing and greatly prefer the ease of dictating over this microphone. Thank you to all those who reviewed Macspeech Dictate prior to my purchase and I hope my review is helpful to those who are considering purchasing the software. I would definitely recommend this software to anybody who needs to create documents and is not a superior typist.

I HATE this product by Pam Rogers (Brookline, MA) 1 Stars

I have MacSpeech Dictate 08 and have been a loyal and happy MAC owner forever. But this product is going to drive me to buy a PC and purchase Dragon. Why? You can't move between your voice and your hands; it is amazing complicated to use; the support people send you chunks of the manual back to you in response to questions. I am thoroughly disgusted. Pam PS I have NEVER written a review befoe.

Not even close to Dragon Naturally Speaking by CEC guy (Torrance, CA) 2 Stars

I just recently entered the MacWorld after being a PC user for decades. Through much of that time I have used Dragon Naturally Speaking. I have grown used to how easily the program navigates through documents. You can simply tell it where to go and it goes there. After you make corrections, you can tell it to go back... and it does. You can just tell it what to correct and it jumps right to the proper place. When I bought my Mac, the salesman told me that Mac Speech Dictate was the "equivalent" of DNS. Yeah, right. MSD is not nearly as self-aware. It can completely lose its place if you, heaven forbid, type in a few words through the keyboard or try to navigate manually. It doesn't seem very comfortable with programs other than its own notepad. I tried using it to do this post, and it simply stopped inserting text. And watch out if you use MS Word for Mac... even after installing the most recent update to MSD, it'll work for a while, then unexpectedly crash. If you've been spoiled by the solid performance and flexibility of Dragon, you'll be sorely disappointed by this program.
