So you'll keep using it, and you'll learn more! That's language-learning success. That's Rosetta Stone. No translation or memorization required. The most effective way to learn a new language is to be surrounded by it. When you were an infant, your parents taught you this way, by intuitively associating words with images. That's the ultimate language lab, but most language-learning programs completely ignore this. Think about all of the ways you've tried to learn a language: classes at school, tapes and cassettes, even software that uses your native language as a base for your next one. What do they all have in common? Translation and memorization. Instead of taking a "direct flight" from your brain to your new language, translation and memorization connects you to your old language. You always have to "fly" from your brain, to your native tongue ... and then translate what you've memorized to communicate. That might work for a few words, but what happens when you get to a sentence or phrase? When you have to change tenses? You're going to make a lot of "connecting flights." That's why those other methods are so frustrating ... and why they fail. Enter Dynamic Immersion. This method encourages you to think like a baby. You'll pair words with vivid, real-life images and make connections between things you know and the new language. Soon, you'll be thinking in a new language, stringing words together into phrases that you create. Innovative technology. Rosetta Stone places this Dynamic Immersion method at the core of a suite of software that works with you to develop your skills. The simple, intuitive interface helps to keep you engaged in the solution, while advanced speech recognition technology makes certain that you're speaking correctly and accurately. Best of all, Rosetta Stone never leaves you behind. You'll only move forward when you're ready, when you've become comfortable and confident. Communicate and connect with the world: Level 1, 2 & 3 Set. Rosetta Stone Level 1, 2 & 3 Set will take you on a journey from the basics to a whole new level of sophistication. CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 147 reviews)
| not worth the price by CAW (Middleboro, MA United States) 1 Stars October 26, 2009 You're really excited about that trip you're taking to a foreign country. You want to speak the language and talk to the natives. So you dive right into Rosetta Stone and in the very first lesson learn how to say "The boy is sitting on the airplane" and "the girls are jumping." And it doesn't get very much more conversational from here until well into the program.
Save your money, get Pimsleur or Fluenz, which both teach you really useful phrases from the beginning, such as "do you understand English?" Or Living Language, which I believe is out of print for some languages but you'll be able to find used.
Oh, by the way, you won't be able to resell your Rosetta Stone software once you're finished with it, so YOU ARE STUCK FOR THE WHOLE PRICE! FOREVER!
| | Do not buy Rosetta Stone, it's a total ripoff! by spinoza (North Shore, MA United States) 1 Stars October 22, 2009 Before spending big bucks for this software, you should know that according to Rosetta Stone's licensing agreement, you are not purchasing the software as a physical product, but rather you are purchasing only the *right* to use it! In other words, Rosetta Stone is only granting you permission to use their software for the $400+ you spend for it. You do not have a right to sell or in any other way share the software with others. Legally, only you the purchaser have "permission" to make use of their software. This deceitful practice of "licensing" a product for use and not for purchase is now being challenged in the courts as a breach of the "First Sale Doctrine", and the best way to protest such tactics is to not buy Rosetta Stone software until the company changes its manipulating and deceitful practices.
My own experience with Rosetta Stone is that is way overpriced for what it offers. There is nothing revolutionary about its method, it is only using multimedia to guide you through learning a language. Rosetta Stone is a highly controlling company and its marketing machine makes it appear that you are getting something special for a very high price. Nothing could be further from the truth. You would be better served by less expensive and more advanced language-learning programs.
| | Yes, I learned a language before using this, and I still recommend it! by Sherry Lyn Kaplan (Texas) 5 Stars October 14, 2009 I cannot say I really agree with the negative reviews on here. I learned Spanish as an adult, and I've been trying to learn Russian for a couple of years now without much success. Everyone should know that there is no ONE method that is perfect for learning a foreign language. Every method works better in conjunction with something else.
Rosetta Stone uses the immersion method, and having lived in Spain for two years, I can say this program really does most accurately recreate that sort of setting more than any other program I've seen. When I lived in Spain and heard words that I didn't know, at first I wasn't sure exactly what they meant, but sort of understood the gist of what they were saying. But after hearing the same word in different situations, it would finally just click and then I never forgot it.
I spent over two thousand dollars on four semesters of Russian in college, and could read and write it well, but could barely put sentences together while trying to speak it. The professor explaining a bunch of complicated grammar rules to the class really didn't help me personally. I honestly couldn't memorize much vocabulary because once we finished a chapter and moved on to the next one, it was hard to revisit the older ones in order to not forget them. I can honestly say that I speak way more Russian after using Rosetta Stone for three months than I did in two years of taking small-sized college courses. Sure, it definitely helped that I was familiar with some of the most common stuff and the writing, but I'd never been able to remember a lot of common vocabulary or say full sentences easily until I used this program. Personally, I think I've been able to remember the words so much better for two reasons: 1) You have to actually think when you use this program. It doesn't just tell you stuff passively and expect you to memorize it. You have to put two and two together, and this helped me so much. 2) They do activities where you have to choose answers based just on listening, other ones just on reading, others on speaking, and writing. This is how I finally remember a lot of words that are really long or just difficult for me.
I think it's worth the money just because they give you a 6 month money back guarantee (if you buy from their website or a kiosk), and it's a lot cheaper than taking classes that may not work for you. Plus, once the classes are over, that's it as far as getting instruction. You pay as much for a semester, but you get to keep the program to work on it whenever you want and go back and use it to review.
I remember using Pimsleur before, and I used to think it was the best program until I tried this. But it's still basically just using memorization with listening, albeit slightly more effectively than other programs on CD.
Bottom line is get this if you're serious about learning another language, but don't expect any one program or class or method to teach you everything.
| | Good program by L. Martin (Nashville, TN) 5 Stars October 14, 2009 Well thought out approach that uses many different ways to get to the same place, which ultimately helps to reinforce what is being taught. And the actual program runs smoothly and is attractive to the eye.
| | Hit and miss pedagogy... by Erik Olson (Ridgefield, WA United States) 4 Stars October 13, 2009 NOTE: So far I've only completed one out of the three available levels. I will update this review as I complete the other two levels of this package.
I've been working on my Spanish on and off for the last couple of years with audio programs like Pimsleur, Coffee Break Spanish, Learning Spanish Like Crazy, and so on. However, since I'm primarily a visual and kinetic learner I wanted an instructional program with those features. Rosetta Stone appeared to be by far the most comprehensive language learning package available. It's certainly complex and well-done, but ultimately falls short of a stand-alone solution.
I'd heard that installing Rosetta Stone on a Mac was problematic. However, this version has a straightforward installation. Everything was pretty easy on my MacBook - all click-and-run, with no dragging and dropping. I did have to wait a bit during the "Add Language" process for the CD to spin up and be read. If I tried to go too fast, I got an error that allowed me to either stop or return to the "Add Another Language Level" prompt, where I could try again. Once I installed all three levels, activation was quick and easy. I entered the activation key when prompted, and all three levels were opened to me.
When I opened the included headset, one of the earpieces was detached and hanging by a wire. Luckily I was able to snap it back into place. Audio setup was also a no-brainer. I plugged the headset into the USB port, repeated the numbers "1,2,3,4,5" as prompted, and I was on my way - or so I thought. At first the program had trouble understanding me. I used the Help function, and it directed me to my Mac's System Preference to make sure that the headset was the primary audio input. Once I made it so, voice recognition was much better, although in some instances it seemed to be pickier about pronunciation than others.
The lessons varied in type (see below for more detail), and all were interesting and helpful. It was easy to spend twenty or thirty minutes using the program and working through the various lessons. The package would also give me the option to review older units at certain points, such as when I reentered the program after a couple day's absence.
The package includes CD audio supplements that are intended to reinforce the main software lessons. However, I found them to be less than adequate. You either listen to a Spanish phrase and repeat it back, or simply listen to Spanish phrases being spoken. There is no English translation, which would have been helpful since there were no pictures to provide definition & context. I recommend skipping the CD audio supplements in favor of an audio-based learning package that's geared towards aural learning.
Level One: There are four units that go over basic vocabulary (colors, food) and simple phrases (hello, goodbye, the shirt is red). The only translation provided is through the picture. Various types of drills are used to shake things up. For example, in some lessons you choose the correct response to a question from multiple options. Others require you to repeat back a phrase using the head microphone. And there are even writing drills that force you to type in the correct response. These drills ensure that all learning styles are utilized: visual, aural, and kinetic. I had fun using the program, and felt that it's a good supplement to more traditional aural language programs.
However, Level One ends with a "Milestone," consisting of a running conversation with two campers that I felt woefully unprepared for. In this case, Rosetta clearly didn't "teach the test." If you're looking for a quick vacation language course, Level One would not be a good choice due to the shortage of travel-related information here. Bottom line, if you're looking to learn Spanish via Rosetta Stone Level One is not enough by itself, so the most cost effective route may be to purchase at least two, if not all three, levels.
Rosetta Stone Spanish is a good supplement to a comprehensive foreign language curriculum, especially if you are a visual learner. I recommend it in conjunction with whatever audio language lesson package that suits your taste.
