| Great for ice, but too big by M. Stewart (Port Charlotte, FL) 3 Stars September 17, 2009 This is great for ice, but too big to actually drink out of. I recommend using the straw assembly with it. It is too big for my purpose, but would work great as a camel pouch for an avid outdoorsman or athlete. It sweats so it needs insulated to keep things cool/warm. I fill mine half way and freeze it overnight to put in my cooler. When going out with the kids, I freeze it and take it with us instead of buying water.
| | Easy to Transport and Great Taste by D. Jansen (Illinois USA) 5 Stars June 22, 2009 I've been using mine 4 days a week for about 4 months now. Each night I fill it 1/4 of the way full and then put it into the freezer. In the morning I fill it up another 1/4 of the way and take it to work where I have cold clean water all day long. I'm impressed by its strength and amazed to see it has survived the repeated freezings.
Pros:
Clean taste - no plastic or other imparted tastes.
The size is large enough to hold a lot of water, and the shape is easy to put it into my laptop bag without people noticing.
It's durable, but I don't expect it to last forever. Given the heavy use, and repeated freezings, I'm quite impressed.
Cons:
The mouth uses a heavy wide thread and wont work with caps and spouts from other water bottles.
I haven't found a good way to clean it. The mouth is too small to get a brush in there. Instead I rinse it out and put it in the dishwasher, hoping the heat will clean.
| | Cool! by Ceac (Missouri) 5 Stars May 30, 2009 Simple, durable, and very cute. I bought these for my kids to take to their sports activities. The Platy is lightweight and has lasted over a year now. Only drawback: the mouth of the bottle is pretty small, so it's hard to do more than to rinse out the inside.
| | very bad ad. by Jack R. Watkins (Haleiwa, HI USA) 1 Stars May 29, 2009 This is one of the Biggest Con Jobs I have ever experienced on Amazon.com. The company is Mountaingear and they show, in their ad, a canteen and holder for $7.95. Then they charge $8.90 for shipping and don't send the holder. The ad shows the holster and bladder, but they only send the bladder, which weighs about 1 oz. In the fine print, it says, bladder only,
but that is hidden in another location. The picture shows the Holster and bladder, in two colors. I will never, ever, ever do any busines with Mountain Gear again. They should be made to wear masks and hold a gun on you.
| | Water water everywhere by Jennine L. Wardle (Kenmore, WA United States) 4 Stars May 15, 2009 I got the 2L Platy for lightweight extra water storage when hiking in the winter or where water is scarce. We have the 3L hydration bags for easy use, plus the 6L storage tank for camp; but having this extra bottle makes us feel even more prepared in back country. It's very light and can be folded or rolled to fit just about any space in your pack or jacket.
The larger size is really great for packing snow in so it can melt while you're hiking. Snow takes up much more space than water and using a smaller bottle or canteen yields less than a cup of drinkable water in the end, this Platy gives you almost 3 cups. The thin material also conducts body heat a lot better than bulky poly bottles and canteens so the snow melts on the go. So far, I've had my Platy freeze solid twice without a rupture... but I destroyed an older rubber bladder and two nalgene bottles with only partial freezes.
The only thing I'd like is a zip opening on the pleated end or side so I could just scoop the snow in rather than having to pack it in the tiny mouthpiece with my fingers. It would also make cleaning it (not that it needs cleaning often) so much easier. Sure, I could have gotten the 2L Platy zip water storage tank, but that shape with the handles didn't fit inside my parka as well :)
