To operate, you simply snap the electronic elements onto a plastic grid, and then connect them together with wire pieces that snap easily into place. The SC-300 lets you build electronic devices such as a whistle chip, speaker, alarm circuit, LED, lamp socket, fan motor, and a speaker. Making Electronics Fun and Easy The included instruction manual offers 305 projects ranging from a simple light switch to a noise-activated burglar alarm. We found the color-coded instruction manual clear and easy to understand, and we had no problems creating any of the projects we tried. The projects are organized by levels of difficulty, and each project teaches an objective such as "To show how electricity can only pass in one direction through an LED." We definitely experienced a sense of satisfaction as we completed each project, and we definitely learned about electronics concepts. The manufacturer recommends the set for ages 8-108; younger engineers should be able to easily follow the diagrams for each project, but will probably require their parents to help explain how everything works. So a word of warning to parents: Brush up on your high school physics! Although the instruction offers some good information, we found that we still needed to brush up on the physics we learned years ago so we could understand concepts such as the difference between a circuit in parallel and in series. Unique Learning Experience Creating a flying UFO from "scratch" with rudimentary electronic pieces was highly satisfying to us, and we think Electronic Snap Circuits may well help young students gain and foster an appreciation for, and interest in, how electronics work and are built. For students who are already learning about electronics in school, this set creates a hands-on experience that makes for more fun than reading about how these things work in a textbook. So don't be surprised if report cards come back with higher grades after playing with this toy. We used this with our homeschooling and it was popular to say the least. The local radio shack also sells it and can be a resource for extras you can buy to get the most out of it. It comes with a booklet that shows you how to make each experiment. Any hands-on tool used for teaching, especially one where the kids get so excited about the results is always a plus. I'd recommend it as a great project to do with your kids to teach them the basics of how electricity works. My oldest quickly was able to do this independently with her siblings.

This toy is awesome. The only reason I rated under 5 stars for educational value is that I'd like to see a description or definition of the different items in more detail. For instance, what a resistor is, does, and what it's used for in real life. I know there is a teacher's companion book that comes with a more expensive set, so for the money, this toy is incredible. Pull the trigger and grab it.

The 5-star reviews do a fine job of highlighting this product's virtues: very educational, very easy-to-follow instructions, very sturdy components, very well-marked parts. I add my 5-star review to the others, because this "toy" is deserving of every accolade it receives. My son absolutely loves it, and it is far above the quality of other, flimsier science kits on electricity. Last year, we spent a fair bit of time learning how to create closed circuits using batteries, tape, rubber bands, wires, and foil. This is so much easier and more rewarding to use, and the multitude of circuit projects you can create will reinforce this very useful lesson. Worth every penny!

We were looking for a toy that would provide hours of learning, and also be fun to play. This was a birthday present for a 10 year-old, who already has every toy imaginable. We hit the jackpot with this one! He immediately started into the first project (there are 300 of them, in progressing difficulty), and played continuously for an hour and a half, his excitement building with each completed project. How many toys can do that? Even his Dad and uncle became like kids again, joining in the fun. The many pieces are organized in tray slots, so there is a place for every piece. Some of the pieces are small, so use caution around young chidren. This was by far the best price we could find for this kit. Well worth the money, and a great learning toy!!

My grandson loved this item. So I've got him larger, more complex, more expensive similar products. I think it is best to start at the top of the line, instead of starting at lower levels and progressing up the ladder to the more expensive ones. I'm talking about this manufacturer. I'll probably get him items costing hundreds of dollars, if he continues to show interest. Expensive? Not at all, if it creates an interest in science which he will continue to develop into adulthood. A great hobby to compete with all the negative influences competing for his time over the years.
