The history of jigsaw puzzles is a puzzle, too! Most historical accounts attribute John Spilsbury with the invention of jigsaw puzzles (circa 1767) when he glued maps to wooden backing and cut along geographic lines to create jigsaw puzzle maps as a teaching aid. Other accounts give the Dutch credit for creating jigsaw puzzles a decade earlier. By the mid 1800s, Germany and France were cutting jigsaw puzzles with interlocking pieces. The industrial revolution brought us die-cut puzzles around 1890, and by 1909, jigsaw puzzles were so popular that Parker Brothers devoted an entire factory to jigsaw puzzle production. |
