A Great Unit with One Nagging Problem by J. Rotunda (North Carolina) 4 Stars
November 06, 2009
I purchased this headset about a week ago to replace the OEM headset that came with the Xbox 360 Elite. After playing with them for two nights, I decided to return then and instead get the Ear Force X31 Digital RF Wireless Game Audio + Xbox Live Chat. The sound on this headset was great for such a unit but still doesn't compare, nor would I expect it to, to my surround sound system at the house. The benefit of this unit though comes at night where playing games through the surround system is impractical for noise reasons. The microphone worked great as well and a few people I played with said they could hear me much more clearly than they did on the OEM headset. In saying that, my primary reason for returning this item (and giving it 4 stars) is due to the fact that the cord that runs from the Xbox to the headset is annoying and could, possibly, pose a safety hazard if you get "into" your games or move frequently. On a side note, I found plugging the unit into the back of the Xbox became nothing short of cord surgery which is Microsoft's fault. Essentially to use this unit and HDMI, you have to have an adapter which has A/V out jacks. The problem is that the jack which comes with the Elite is too big - preventing HDMI and the jacks from being plugged in. So Microsoft makes you purchase an additional cord ($60) for the privilege. I found though with very minimal trouble - and my handy phillips head screwdriver - I was able to pop off the plastic housing around the cable and get both plugs in. The nice thing is that the housing snaps back in should you ever want to put it back on or sell the unit.

Comfortable, Excellent Sound, Use for Gaming and Podcast Editing by Jack LaPilusa (Maryland) 5 Stars

This is the first headset I've bought. I bought it expecting to only use for games on the PC and Xbox. Eventually, they were being used more than my regular speakers on my TV and PC. The quality of the sound is surprisingly great. I would've thought they would be sold as just headphones. The sound is superb. The headphones are LOUD. I barely ever turn them up more than 1/5 way up. The bass is nice and does its job (It's not too overpowering), and the sound is balanced (not to much bass or treble). The headphones give you a sense of surround sound, despite the fact that they aren't surround headphones. I was still able to tell when somebody was sneaking up behind me in Call of Duty 4. They work with the TV (using an included cable that allows both the headphones and your audio cables to be used at the same time) and the PC. They do a nice job of keeping out sound from the outside world too. The headphones are quite comfortable. Lots of padding, and anybodies head could fit in them. I will have them on for 3-5 hours at a time, and my ears will be a little achy, but that's all. Pretty amazing for the price. The mic is really nice, I use it for podcasting. My other hosts said I sounded clear and it was good quality. This won't change Xbox live sound. No matter what mic you have, it'll always sound crappy. There is also a cable that plugs into your Xbox controller for voice chat. The headphones include the cables I mentioned above, along with a USB extender for power, in case your xbox and TV aren't right next to each other. I am very impressed with this headset. Comfortable, great sound, and a superb mic. Kudos to you, Turtle Beach.

I had to send this headset back because of sound quality issues. However, before I sent them back, I was using an audio-technica studio headset with a 5.1 surround sound home theatre system connected to my xbox 360 console with an optical cable. I had ordered the ear force headset because I got tired of wearing the xbox communicator headset underneath the audio-technica headset so I coud both chat and listen to the game. This setup is physically a bit uncomfortable but the sound is incredible. With the Ear Force X1, sound are muddled, there's too much bass and not enough treble, too many cords and too much cord length. I suppose for $50 it does an adequate job. I also use a chat pad which I cannot connect to the headset because of the shape of the connector plug that goes into the xbox 360 controller - it's shaped like the headset input that comes with the xbox 360 console package (slightly curved case, snaps right over and onto the controller). The X1 is very comfortable though. I will probably save up for a wireless 5.1 or better headset.
