EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Amazon.com Fracture advances players to the year 2161, where the effects of global warming have altered the planet’s landscape, and a clash in ideologies over human enhancement places society on the threshold of war. In utilizing the core gameplay mechanic of Fracture, a destructive next-generation technology known as Terrain Deformation, players are equipped with an arsenal of futuristic weaponry to strategically reshape their surroundings on the fly. Every action they perform dynamically reshapes the earth in ways no videogame has ever seen. Players set foot on the frontlines of this epic conflict in the role of Jet Brody, a demolitions expert fighting for the Atlantic Alliance, who rely upon cybernetic enhancement. Pitted against the genetically enhanced soldiers of the Pacifican army, players will experience a revolution in 22nd-century warfare. When Brody throws a tectonic grenade onto a level battlefield, the ground blasts upward providing access to otherwise unreachable areas or providing cover against approaching enemies. Surrounded on all sides by Pacifican forces, Brody heaves a vortex grenade, creating a swirling tornado-like mass of boulder, dirt and debris to dispatch his foes. These are just a few samples of the possibilities for Terrain Deformation. Players not only change the battlefield – they change the face of the battle itself. Reshape the battlefield with terrain shattering weapons: Experience a dynamic battlefield that is unique every time you play. Use never–before-seen weapons to fracture, crater, freeze, or elevate the earth. Unleash a subterranean torpedo toward your enemy and literally blast the earth from beneath his feet. For the first time, players can mold a war zone for an advantage to push the attack or mount a defense. Experience a story of betrayal and revenge: Follow the journey of a patriotic Atlantic Alliance soldier when an act of treason launches him into the lethal battlefield of the 22nd century, as forces wage a battle of genetics vs. cybernetics. In a war that divides loyalties and tests the bonds of country and family, this soldier’s discoveries will ultimately decide the fate of North America and perhaps the world. Multi-player & co-operative play allows the terrain deforming battles to rage on: Choose the side of the genetically enhanced Pacificans or the cybernetically powerful Atlantic Alliance, then jump online and exploit your chosen sides advantages as Terrain Deformation and Genetic vs. Cybernetic elements allow for endless hours of fun with friends online. Fight for control of familiar locations and landmarks: The last World Wars were fought in Europe, but the next great global war will be fought on American soil. Battle in famous locations across the United States. Defend the Atlantic Alliance in Washington, DC, fight the decisive battle for control of Pacifica in the basin of the now-empty San Francisco bay and uncover the secret that will determine the world’s fate in the Southwest Desert. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 10 reviews)
| fracture overall rating by Ricardo (NY) 3 Stars September 12, 2009 The game starts by showing how the future is going to be a bad place. Since it's around the 22nd century, the west coast began changing people DNA while the east coast try to use cybernetic instead. You can regenerate your health by taking cover and you can use your guns to change the terrains. you play as Jet Brody and it's up to you to stop the general from taking over the world, as your progressive you'll be shooting wave after wave of enemies while keeping the camera under control. The bad AI make the game frustrating at time, the game is pretty standard for a shooting game. The bosses, story mode, selections of different weapons such as snipers, rocket launchers, machine guns, grenades. You'll drive a futuristic off-road vehicle and challenges makes the game worth playing. There is also team deathmatch, capture the flag and king of hill you can play against friends for fun.
the good:
good soundtrack, multiplayer excavation is fun.
the bad:
cheap deaths and frustration as you get farther on the story mode.
Overall I'll give it a score of 6.8
the story was alright, my favorite weapon was the rocket launcher and the tornado grenade. The explosion is nice and the online was fun to play with friends.
| | FRAC \ TURE....KICKS \ @$$ by R. Hall (Winamac, In United States) 5 Stars September 04, 2009 Following in the destructive footsteps of Volition's Red Faction, Lucas Arts' Fracture sets a new standard for enviromental manipulation. Raising and lowering the terrain to provide cover is cool, raising and lowering the terrain to control and corral your enemies is cooler. When you control the environment you control your enemies and what they do, if they hide behind a crate blast it away from them, if they hide behind a rock raise the ground they stand on and shoot them as they tumble over the it or lower it and crush them with it. It isn't very often that a game does something cool and fully realized what they could do with it but Fracture really went all the way with it's terrain deformation. TD is just as much a part of Fracture as bullet time is for Max Payne. Your entrencher will be as close a friend as your rifle and will get you out of plenty of hot situations. I could go on and on about the TD but I won't.
Fracture feels and plays a lot like Lost Planet so the controls are solid the aiming is pretty tight. The weapon selection is full of interesting tools like the torpedo launcher that gophers it's way under your enemy and explodes when you trigger it, or the 'deep freeze' that turns anything you shoot into ice. The vortex grenade sucks in everything in a fifty foot radius spins it in a tornado of debris and explodes. The 'rhino' shoots a large rock that rolls and seeks out enemies to crush. The 'mole mine' burrows in the ground, waits for enemies to come by, crawls after them and explodes. There is also a offroad vehicle, TDV-1, armed with an auto turret and a torpedo launcher used make ramps to boost over ravines. There are upgrades given to you that allow you to raise the ground and jump at the same time to boost you up higher and an augmented punch that blasts the hell out of enemies. In short the weapons are fun and useful.
The story is cool and flows well as you progress through the game. The characters are interesting and the voice acting is very good and features Kelly Hu as the pacifican scientist.
The only bad thing about the game is the enemies, mostly the Raptors, will throw grenades(in endless supply)at every opprotunity and even when you're only two feet away, thats just lazy.
Overall Fracture is a great game and does everything it sets out to do. Fracture is fun, creative, and practicaly without gameplay flaws. You'd be crazy to miss it.
| | Eh by A. Kaye (NYC) 3 Stars August 28, 2009 The game was a little boring and very repeptitive. I finished it, but it really was no more than average.
| | Fracture-rific!!! by Gregory Jaurigue (Chicago, IL) 4 Stars July 16, 2009 This game takes the standard first person shooter and gives it a nice twist with the ability to alter the terrain. I really enjoyed this fresh take on this overloaded genre. The graphics are really good and the controls handle very well. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys fps games but is looking for something different. Talk about changing the playing field, this game gives you that ability. A must buy if you can find if for $20 or less.
| | If you like frustration, this is your game by Pikminfan (Rossburg, Ohio United States) 3 Stars June 30, 2009 Having played Fracture through to completion, I walked away from the game with very mixed feelings.
On one hand, Fracture is a very competent FPS with rich graphics, strong character designs and fun, fully deformable environments. From a functionality standpoint-there is little to complain about. The controls are spot on and intuitive, the camera is unnoticeable, and it seems to be glitch-free. Everything runs as smoothly and as properly as you would expect from a game of this caliber-and the polish that was put into this game is evident. Fracture is a beautiful game. It can also be fun deforming the environment with your weapon and your grenades and this feature provides a lot of opportunity for creative strategy.
What gripes me about Fracture however-is that the game is just damn frustrating. If nonstop aggravation, frustration and the urge to lob your controller through the tv are your idea of fun in a video game-then by all means Fracture is the perfect game for you.
Enemies miles off in the distance (that you can't reach with your own measly gun) will blast you to pieces in seconds, enemies will also suddenly appear from thin air in a room that you just spent ten minutes clearing-and promptly kill you by shooting you in the back, it's not uncommon either for you to spend a good 20 to 30 minutes getting through an area just to be killed and have to start clear back from the beginning. I cannot count the number of times I must have shouted out loud, "are you *bleeping* kidding me??" These sorts of things, a fun game do not make-and Fracture can be an exercise in sheer video game patience.
The game's length is decent, but I suspect part of that comes from an artificial lengthening due to the amount of times you die and must restart. (Trust me you will die A LOT in this game.) There were sections of Fracture where I felt I must have spent more time dying than playing. And for the coup-de-grace of gripes with Fracture-the final battle is hands down the most frustrating-make you want to rip the hair out of your head, punch a whole in the wall and smash a beer bottle over a chair, cheap boss battles I have ever fought. If it weren't for an insane need to finish the games that I start I wouldn't have bothered. I can't tell you how many times I had to play this same segment, over and over and over again.
Fracture is definitely worth a rental-or a purchase if you can it for cheap-but be warned, your language will not improve while playing this game-nor will your mental health.
