Bond Is Back In A Great Game by J. Urban (Charlotte, NC) 4 Stars
June 09, 2009
I've played many of the various Bond games over the years and some were great and others mediocre, but "James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace" is one of the best to hit consoles. It is a first person shooter, but shifts to a third person perspective when you seek out cover or are climbing, etc. There is no confusion and the cover system is one of the better ones I have seen, allowing you to move from one cover point to another with a quick movement. The game starts out where the movie "Casino Royale" ended and you start playing as Bond in an extended scene at that mansion at the end of the film. The game takes liberties throughout with the story from both films, but for the most part, they extend or "flesh-out" scenes that were referred to in the movies or just seem to make sense in the game (except the "Opera level"). You'll first notice the graphics are very sharp; Daniel Craig looks just like Daniel Craig. The attention to detail of the settings and characters is top notch all the way. There were very few times I thought the graphics didn't look next-gen and mainly those were because they were levels set at night. All of the particle effects and reflections and everything that makes next-gen so great, are there. The sound is great with the weapon sounds appropriate for the weapons and of course the musical score featured much of the two movies' soundtracks and also featured new music. The enemy AI was pretty good, and on default difficulty, it forced me to play smart and use cover instead of just running in and shooting. The takedowns were neat in the beginning, but there are only a few variations and by the time you are half-way through, they seem more like a gimmick than an actual necessity. Many of the enemies you really had to sneak up on in order to perform a takedown. Others you could by running into them from around a corner. I preferred using the weapons and environment to my advantage, though when doing something cool like a Bond move (i.e. blowing up barrels to kill a group of bad guys) there was no Bond music or indication you really did something cool, like in past Bond games. (Many of these Bond moments are shown on screen by reflecting objects you can shoot with a resulting action, so you don't really have to think like Bond--just look for the shining interactive objects. The levels are divided amongst scenes from "Casino Royale" and "Quantum of Solace", with, frankly, most of the really enjoyable levels being from the better of the two films: "Casino Royale." The levels are also in no order and jump from movie to movie, making it a little confusing as to the timeframe. Also, the levels are a little too linear with not many alternate routes, if any. There was only minor slowdown and occasional choppiness, really nothing to spoil the game. The game is about 10-12 hours, if you take your time. Some may beat it quicker in the 8-9 hour timeframe. Multiplayer makes up for the somewhat quick playthrough. Also, there are bonus areas on the blu-ray where you can view concept art and other miscellaneous info about production--all standard fare. Overall, this is a great edition to the Bond games and clearly above average. If you like FPS's and Bond, this is a no brainer! 4/5 stars Pros: *10-12+ hrs. of gameplay. *Great graphics for the character models and levels. *Nice selection of weapons and using the PDA is pretty fun. *Most levels are constructed quite well and make you feel like you are in the movies. *Controls are solid. *It has the best scenes from both of the Bond movies it is based on. *Enemy AI is good. *Sound is good. *Has some replayability value due to just the overall fun factor (and trophy support). Cons: *Levels, while graphically sharp, are a bit too linear. *Enemy AI is not consistent and on default difficulty it can sometimes be too hard. *A few glitches and slowdown.

No real gameplay; more an interactive movie by D. Discs (USA) 2 Stars

The advertorial review is promising: a cover system, stealth, intelligent AI. The reality is that this is less of a game than it is an interactive movie. After the tutorial, the very first game mission demands that the player chase a fleeing enemy and catch him with all haste. Of course, this is impossible as the player will quickly be cut down by enemy gunfire. Instead the player is required to ignore the premise (and the instructions) and stop to use cover and stealth at every required juncture. There's no stress, though: no matter how long the player spends on this chore, the fleeing enemy never gets away. To further diminish the sense that the player makes any real choices in the game (which might risk providing some dramatic tension), it is likewise impossible to achieve objectives ahead of schedule. A later moment in the same chase scene finds Bond with cover, a clear view of the fleeing target, and a sniper rifle. However, the game demands that Bond perform a series of elaborate jumps, rather than stopping to fire at the target. Players who attempt the latter option find that the target can take numerous headshots without slowing down. The game also suffers from a lack of depth in the field of play. Invisible walls abound, and while Bond is capable of making great leaps when the program demands it, at other times a simple step down from a 2nd story balcony will kill him, even at full health. Players who don't mind being cattle-herded from one button-pressing moment to the next can find some measure of solace in the lush visuals. Those seeking a more involved gameplay experience will be disappointed. Compared to previous Bond games, some of which were quite impressive, Quantum of Solace may well deliver improved AI. Unfortunately, it expects to do the thinking for the player as well.

Fun for a licenced game Part 2 is on the collectors edition reviews by J. Paul (hell MI usa) 3 Stars

This game here is a pretty solid FPS it's not the top of the line FPS like DOOM HALO or Resistance 1&2. Your in the role of Bond to an extent it follows the movie quite well. basically your looking for the missing money from Casino Royal and your wanting to avenge the death of Vaspar Your looking for a corrupt business man named Dominic Green & General Lulz Medriano you need help from a Bolivian Secret Service agent Camille Rivera. After the 4th level you go back to the Casino Royal missions I guess the game would have been shorter than it already is. It tells how You won the money from LeChefe he's a banker for the worlds terrorists how Vespar was killed. Weapons are Walther PPK a couple of sniper rifle a assortment of machine guns & assault rifles a gernade luancher standard gernades that are worthless hand to hand combat which is a great feature I absolutely love it.
