Bring the PAIN by SnS (Crossville, TN) 5 Stars
October 17, 2009
PAIN is a game that defies a simple explanation. It's brainless fun with a focus on skill and strategy. I have been a player of this game for the last year and a half. To this day, PAIN remains on my hard drive and constant staple of my gaming. For ten dollars you get the core game. That core consists of two characters, one stage. You have the ability to unlock two additional costumes for Jarvis and three variations of the main stage. For a core game, I think that exceeds what someone should expect. It should be noted that the fun of PAIN comes from expanding on it. I have been adding bit by bit over the last year and a half. A new stage or character comes out, I buy it. That means that over the last 18 months I have probably sunk in what it would have cost me to buy a full new game, and now I own a full game of PAIN that is constantly being added to. The whole game has Downtown, Abusement Park, Morningwood Studios, Sore Spots (two smaller stages set in a gymnasium and an Area-51 type lab), and Stiffsonian Museum as stages to play and a large roster of characters from generic, but very funny created characters to star cameos from David Hasseloff, Andy Dick, and George Takei as of this review being written (and who wouldn't enjoy sending Andy Dick in to an oncoming train?). On top of all of that, there are several modes of play from a simple sandbox approach, to modes with specific goals in mind like flinging another character through glass panes, hitting as many explosive crates as you can, and taking down castles in the quickest time or fewest throws. Keep in mind, please, that many of these game modes must be bought and added to the core PAIN. This game's real strong suit is multi-play though. From bowling, to darts, to Fortress, to Horse and Trauma; there is something for everyone here. Many of the game modes don't even require more than one controller, making it an excellent game if you are looking for something to play with friends but haven't gotten additional controllers. They have even recently added online play, and it is certainly worth note that there are even a couple DLC characters that are free to get meaning that with this core game you can actually have something like four or five characters at the start(providing you take the time to download them). The creators of this game are perfecting their craft, with new add-ons improving upon the old and even better ways to play. Personally for me, if you can't get everything at once (and honestly not alot out there can), then you should look in to Naughty Bits, Abusement Park, and/or a few new characters. The folks at PAIN even add a new PAINLabs every week or so which is simply a hokey time-killer that is free of charge and as of this review they have added four or five new costumes for their characters free of charge. In short, PAIN is a skillful, yet brainless, romp with plenty of stupidity to go around and entertain most players providing you find yourself willing to add to it. The best way to view this core purchase is that it is like layaway, where you get a little bit of the game to start things off and as you pay in to it, you get more of the game to play. Try it out, but keep in mind, the Core game is not the entire game and many of the better additions came after the initial release. You'll see, PAIN is pleasure.

Childish...and hilarious by Mark Androvich (California) 4 Stars

There are games that push the boundaries as "art", there are games that strive to be taken as seriously as novels, and there are games that seek to provide audiences with as much edge-of-your-seat action as a summer blockbuster film. Pain is not any of these-- it seeks only to make you laugh, and at that it succeeds...at least, if you are part of the targeted demographic. Yes, like the Three Stooges, Pain is a game that is not likely to appeal to very many females. None of the women I've shown it to thought it was funny to toss a mime through a plate glass window or to knock over a port-a-potty into the path of an oncoming police car, to grab a walker-toting grandma and drag her into the subway, or to fling yourself off of an amusement park thrill ride. This game is all about causing mayhem in a non-bloody (but still cringe-inducing) manner. For that reason, let alone the crude humor, it is also not meant for kids. The T rating is definitely deserved. The game features an amazing replay mode that allows you to watch and record the action from many angles, not to mention a handful of enjoyable multiplayer games, a jukebox option for using your own music, trophy support (albeit belatedly tacked-on), in-game awards, and dozens of add-on characters and extra modes (for a fee). Even so, the game is not particularly deep, and some players might get bored with the destruction quicker than others. For the price, however, it is definitely a worthwhile investment that anyone with a juvenile sense of humor will enjoy.

I was so excited when I finally was able to buy this game. It seemed so much fun to be able to throw a character in a town and collect points by hurting him. I was wrong, this is not fun. This is basically a party game; you get with your friends and try to beat each other's scores. It's not a bad Idea except that this game for 10 dollars only gives you ONE level. That's it, you can unlock other parts of the same level but you never leave the city, unless you spend more money and buy the other levels. Gameplay, although the premise is violent, there is no blood or cursing so the entire family can play. You have a giant slingshot with a character on it (only 2 characters come with the game and 1 free downloadable "Daxter") and you shoot him to various parts in the level attempting to cause as much destruction as possible to get points. You can hold on to bombs and people, and time it so that you can throw them into other things to try and cause as much damage as possible while at the same time injuring the character as much as you can to obtain multipliers, and "Oooch" bonuses. Once you launch the character and he hits his destination you lose control of him for the most part, except by using the Oooch meter. An Oooch is a sort of bonus which allows you to slightly move your character in spurts. Basically, you shove your crappy character in traffic and Oooch him in front of cars if you want a lot of points and multipliers. They have various modes to play, in the one level you get for 10 bucks, PAINdemonium; just try to cause destruction and get points. Aftermath; is unlockable mode that's the same as PAINdemonium but from a different angle. Bowling, this is the best in my opinion, you and your friends team up, throw your characters and a set of pins to try to knock them all down, but the other player has obstacles he can detonate to stop you character in mid air like crates and store signs. And finally mime toss, you grab a mime in mid air and toss him unto panes of glass while being timed. This is fun for a couple of hours with some friends, but for 10 dollars you get bored really quick, you have to spend more on the other levels and characters. And as far as the amusement factor, once I played the game for 2 hours I was done. It's not as fun as I thought, and watching the same character het hurt over and over gets boring quickly. The characters never change, they never become visibly hurt they just yell ouch a lot. By the way, the trophies for the 10 dollar version are very few, if you want to get them all you have to buy all the "extra" content. In my arrogant opinion, this game is not worth 10 dollars, even if the package the whole game all the levels and characters in to a 30 dollar package it still wouldn't be worth it. This game is like a mildly funny joke that someone says over and over and over again. I can't tell you if the extra content is worth it because there is no way I'm ever spending more money on this game. It got 2 stars just because of the bowling game.

Fun Concept, But Lacks Value by Reginald Chairface (USA) 3 Stars

The basic idea behind this game is great. Shooting your character at a scene in order to produce crazy damage to yourself and the things around you. It's really fun for a little while, but once the novelty starts to wear off, you realize that there just isn't enough to do, and far too much of the content must be purchased separately. You only get a couple of characters and a couple of scenes to shoot at with your purchase of the "full game." Even some of the gameplay modes must be purchased. In my opinion, this is a real cheap move by the developer. If you do buy it, just be aware that you are getting a limited product. Furthermore, since it is a downloaded game, you can never resell it, and the price stays fixed. Retail games that have been out for a couple of years only cost a third of what they did new, but this game still costs full price. If you buy this game and a few add-ons, you still just have a toy mini-game. For the same price, you could buy a used retail game which cost sixty bucks just two years ago. When you're done with the retail game, you could sell it and get half of your money back. Do the math.

Best $10 you'll spend by Patrick Erley (Pentwater, MI United States) 5 Stars

This is quite the novel game... I could write a thousand word essay as to why I think what I do of it... but I won't. Once you get past the games semi-steep learning curve, it has this incredible replay-ability to it. It's like a pinball machine in that aspect (and others); doing the same thing twice doesn't yield the same results. There are a lot (dozens) of add-on characters, and 4 or 5 add-on levels, which may put you off in that you don't get everything with the game. The $10 you spend up front gives you a chance to figure out if you enjoy the game, and if so, how much you'd be willing to spend for additional content. I went all out and got everything, because I love the game. If you don't like it that much, you're only out the $10 for the base game, not the $60 you might spend on a game to find out you don't enjoy it as much as you thought you would (I'm looking at you, fallout 3). Another BIG plus to this game is the developers actually respond to posts on their blog and take customer's feedback seriously. It's been out for 2ish years (to date), and is still receiving updates/add-ons/bug-fixes.
