EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Description High in the mountains of central Africa and deep within a rain forest of Indonesian Borneo, two dedicated scientists have sought and found the mountain gorilla and the elusive orangutan. This captivating film features the fieldwork of Dian Fossey and Birute Galdikas-Brindamour, both part of world-wide efforts to understand man's closest living relatives. Join these courageous women for a warm and intimate view of these rare animals in SEARCH FOR THE GREAT APES. | Amazon.com Featuring the fieldwork of Dian Fossey and Birute Galdikas-Brindamour, this video suffers from poor editing and weak storytelling. The print is also badly faded. Originally released in 1975, it attempts to describe Galdikas-Brindamour's research with the orangutans of Borneo and Fossey's renowned work with Rwanda's mountain gorillas but flounders without a plot. Fossey set out, in 1967, to find clues among the apes about primal man; however, this video does not present her exhaustive work in a meaningful way. In comparison with Jane Goodall: My Life with the Chimpanzees, this tape is sadly deficient, an incomplete portrait of a woman who devoted her life to the study of the mountain gorillas and was brutally murdered in 1985 on Mount Visoke. It would be a great gift to us all if National Geographic revisited the subject of Fossey and her work rather than slapping on a written epilogue as they have here. --Cristina Del Sesto |

| Amazing video coverage of Gorilla's by Mr. R. Van Schelven (Leidschendam, The Netherlands) 5 Stars June 02, 2000 It is a pity that these videos are so short. It is about 50 minutes and evenly spents time with Birutas Galdikas and Dian Fossey. The video is worth getting for the amazing coverage of Dian Fossey with the Mountain Gorilla's. Especially the part where she spents time with Digit. It feels like intruding and it is moving to see it. It is a pity that there is no mentioning of her active conservation, but heh this the National Geographic. It would be too much to ask.
