Involving Service Users Bridges The Theory-Practice GapApril 16, 2004Psychological treatments for mental health problems that look promising in theory are often a disappointment when applied in the real world. A growing number of services and researchers are consulting the users of mental health services in an attempt to bridge this gap between theory and practice. A group of psychologists from the University of London Institute of Psychiatry will put forward a more radical approach to this problem in a symposium held today, Thursday 15 April 2004, at the Annual Conference of the British Psychological Society's Division of Clinical Psychology at Imperial College, London The organiser of the symposium, Professor Til Wykes, said: "Most of the presenters in this symposium have had experience of using mental health services as clients themselves. They believe that we should not only consult service users about priorities for research but involve them in the research itself as partners." Dr Diana Rose will present a paper on a systematic review from the consumer's perspective. The topic of the review was electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The review found that half the people who receive ECT do not feel they are given enough information about it first, and that a third of those who sign consent forms feel under pressure to do so. Angela Sweeney will present her work producing questionnaires with users and carers. She showed that it is possible to produce measures of mental health service that reflect their understanding and experiences. Tanya Graham will report that most young people do not see their GP as a source of help for mental distress but would rather turn to family and friends. She will present her findings to a panel of young patients who will develop a set of standards that will make young people more likely to seek help from doctors and give them a better experience when they do so | |||||||||||||||||||||
