Second Pinpoint Faraday Award for Surrey Space Centre

The Surrey Space Centre and Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL), have won a further Pinpoint Faraday award. The latest CASE studentship is intended to exploit the potential for attitude determination using GNSS signals. The primary focus of application for this study is the determination of the pointing of a satellite equipped with a special multi-antenna GNSS receiver. Several of the SSTL-built satellites carry multi-antenna GPS receivers that can be used to support this research, and ground based receivers and simulators are also available. Challenges include improving robustness and accuracy of the attitude solutions through analytical and numerical means, embedding algorithms within the receiver and demonstrating operation in real-time on the orbiting satellite.
Following the award of a Pinpoint Faraday award last year, a CASE studentship is successfully running at SSC/SSTL on the design of an advanced Galileo-capable space GNSS receiver that may become adapted for attitude determination
Under the new CASE studentship, worth £44,700, a PhD student will investigate and exploit the new GPS and GALILEO navigation signals for space applications. Architectures for dual frequency reception permit precise low Earth orbit determination and novel remote sensing techniques using GNSS signals. Weak signal tracking techniques can be applied to permit operation of GNSS receivers in geostationary orbits. The work will include digital signal processing of GNSS signals, VHDL, C-programming and some RF design.
The Surrey Space Centre (SSC) at the University of Surrey is a postgraduate research centre specialising in space technology and related research. SSC works very closely with its industrial wing, Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL), to provide academic support for its commercial and research satellite missions.
SSTL has launched 23 small satellite missions since 1981. Among many areas of satellite technology, SSC and SSTL have a long history in GNSS technology, supplying receivers to ESA, NASA and the US Air Force. With the development of their own space GPS receiver, SSTL has been able to stimulate innovative areas of GNSS research, such as autonomous orbit determination and control, GNSS attitude determination, and GNSS-based remote sensing. The company's expertise in small satellites and GNSS has led to the award of the contract to build the first Galileo satellite, GSTB-V2/A.
