Polar Tour On Cross-Country Vehicles

Expedition called "Polar Ring" starts in mid-March this year from a town called Salekhard. The expedition members will travel on cross-country pneumatic vehicles to the east along the Arctic Ocean coast up to the Novaya Zemlya and, then, take route to the North Pole and finish in Canada by the time of ice melting in summer. Before, people reached the North Pole afoot; now, it is time for vehicles. The expedition is organized by the Expedition Centre "ARCTIC" (ECA) and Rambler Media Group. The research program is developed by specialists from the Geographical Faculty of the Moscow State University and supported by WWF of Russia.

In course of the expedition, new electronic devices and equipment designed for use in high latitudes will be put to the test. Many devices are trial specimens that need to be tested in extreme conditions. There is also a large medicinal program for observing the health of the expedition members. They will try certain food rations, tonic agents, and stimulants. Each of the members is provided an individual transmitter to send data on his body state to the continent. Scientists plan studies on Arctic climate too, particularly, within an area unexplored until the present time.

The cross-country vehicles having soft wheels roll very gently over the ground and do not damage the lichenous cover of tundra. They are good for use over roadless and rugged terrain, reliable, and much cheaper than a helicopter. Similar vehicles have already been used in the Antarctic and Arctic and even in temperate latitudes. They are assembled in Moscow and Tula, and their parts are produced by different Russian factories.

Rambler Media Group is going to test its technical possibilities in this polar tour. The expedition team will daily transmit by satellite 5 min of video materials. It is planned to continuously maintain the Internet connection, for the first time in high latitudes.

Twelve people on four vehicles should overcome about 7000 km within three months. All members of the team are experienced polar explorers. The team is headed Vladimir Chukov - President of the ECA, professional traveller, organizer and head of 19 expeditions to high latitudes, including ski transition to the North Pole and trans-arctic journey from Russia to Canada. Among the expedition organizers, there is also President of the Association of Russian Polar Explorers Artur Chilingarov.

One of the expedition members selected from the Internet applicants is Viktor Pomelov - specialist from the NPO "Chimavtomatika" (Moscow) and President of the husky dog club "Severnyi veter". In this expedition, he expects to improve his polar life skills that will be required in his future campaigns.

This expedition is held under the UN flag and supported by the WWF.
