Microbiology experts meet Scottish Parliamentarians
March 03, 2004
Microbiology experts will be gathering today, 04 March 2004, at the Hub in Edinburgh to tell MSPs about the many varied ways in which microbes are involved in the everyday issues requiring Government decisions. Health, environment and the economy occupy much of the work of the Scottish Parliament. These topics are often dominated by microbiology. From the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases to the production of beer, cheese and whisky or cleaning up pollution, microbes have an important part to play.
"We need microbiologists", explains Hugh Pennington, President of the Society for General Microbiology. "It used to be said that antibiotics would make microbiologists redundant. How wrong! BSE, E. coli O157 and foot-and-mouth disease at the end of last century and SARS and avian influenza at the beginning of this have proved the reverse to be true!"
Controversial health scares like these hit the headlines regularly. Less well publicised are the essential roles of microbes in keeping the nutrient cycles of the planet turning. Microbes are necessary to protect the environment and microbiologists can help to solve many of our most difficult environmental problems.
To generate wealth and jobs, microbes can also be put to work. Entrepreneurial activity is strong in Scotland and biotechnology is particularly well established. Amazingly, scientists are even exploiting microbes from the sea to produce pharmaceuticals, enzymes and surfactants.
Experts from all areas of microbiology will be at the event to answer such questions as: · Why is E. coli O157 such a problem in UK cattle? · What can be done to clean up land contaminated with heavy metals? · How can we combat antibiotic resistance?
If you want to know how microbiology can make a difference, then visit SGM's stand at the Microbiology Awareness Campaign event.
The event has been organised by the Society for General Microbiology.
