Making Money From Microbes - Microbiology Today: February 2004 IssueFebruary 10, 2004Microbes make money. Not literally of course, but they have been exploited by us for thousands of years to make products for our consumption, use or trade, such as beer, cheese and bread. More recent examples are antibiotics, genome sequencing, bioremediation and greener fuels. With ever more schemes set up or allocated bigger budgets to assist in the commercial development of research projects, the February 2004 issue of Microbiology Today seeks to explore some of the practicalities of turning a great idea into commercial reality. This issue also addresses the issue of open access publishing and importance of good science communication. On the theme of biobusiness, Simon Browning, Managing Director of Connect Yorkshire, sheds some light on ways to finance a new biotechnology venture (page 4). Dr Sandy Primrose, Business and Technology Management, and Dr Richard Gillard, Chartered and European Patent Attorney at Elkington and Fife, tell us how to protect inventions from competitors with patent strategies for biotechnology companies (page 6). Faye Jones takes a look at the information that is available on the Internet for getting into biobusiness (page 12). Professor John Peberdy describes the Biotechnology YES scheme, which teaches young scientists some of the necessary skills to become an entrepreneur (page 14). With good science communication and maintaining standards in mind, Ron Fraser, Executive Secretary for the Society, discusses the issues surrounding open access publishing and what the future holds for the Society's journals. And, Peter Cotgreave, Director of Save British Science, questions whether politicians are getting involved in scientific debate. Other features in the February issue of Microbiology Today include: These are just some of the articles that appear, together with all the regular features and reports of Society activities. | |||||||||||||||||||||
