National Science Week 2004: Science for all shapes and sizes
January 29, 2004National Science Week 2004 (12-21 March) is fast approaching, with science events for everyone across the UK. From the science of David Beckham in Yorkshire to a look at one of the world's oldest products of biotechnology (wine, of course) in London and spaghetti tower-building in Scotland, hundreds of thousands of people of all ages will be taking part in over a thousand events.
"National Science Week is about opening doors to science for everyone," said Dr Roland Jackson, Chief Executive of the BA (British Association for the Advancement of Science), which co-ordinates National Science Week. "We believe that people should be at the heart of science, and that is exactly what National Science Week aims to achieve. We encourage everyone to go out this week and join in one of the hundreds of events taking place around the UK, visit their local science centre, or even just explore the science in their own home."
National Science Week is supported by the Office of Science and Technology.
Spring into Science
In the run-up to National Science Week, the BA and the Woodland Trust (the UK's leading woodland conservation charity) have joined together to create Spring into Science, a nationwide investigation looking for the first signs of spring. The investigation has been designed so that people of all ages - from school children to office workers to pensioners - can take part. Location does not matter, whether inner-city or rural - a tree in the street or a back garden pond can be used. To find out how to take part in the study, visit www.the-ba.net/nsw.
The Ig Nobel Prizes National Science Week tour
A particular highlight of National Science Week is certain to be the Ig Nobel Prizes National Science Week tour. From 11-22 March Marc Abrahams (founder of the Annals of Improbable Research) will be touring the UK and Ireland. The show features Ig Nobel winners, a limerick competition and nominees to the Luxuriant Flowing Hair Club for scientists. The tour will be stopping in Oxford, Nottingham, Belfast, Manchester, Glasgow, Exeter, Dublin, Warrington, Birmingham and London. To book call 020 7019 4941.
