Brain Coup For BangorJanuary 19, 2004The University of Wales, Bangor has been awarded a grant of £1,250,000 by the prestigious Wolfson Foundation to support the establishment of an Institute for Clinical and Cognitive Neurosciences within the School of Psychology. The new Institute will capitalise upon world-leading research already underway at Bangor's School of Psychology and will create a major centre of excellence within the UK for the study of brain activity and brain dysfunction in disorders such as stroke, head trauma, Parkinsons' disease and schizophrenia. It will house neuroscience researchers from a range of disciplines and the latest technology for brain imaging and assessment. The Institute will also contribute to the training of medical students and staff; it will attract leading medical academics to the area and will serve to improve care for patients in North Wales. The Wolfson monies will be combined with funding from the Welsh Assembly (from the Science Research Infrastructure Fund) to build the third phase of Adeilad Brigantia in which the Institute will be sited. The academic base of the recently established North Wales Clinical School, which is devoted to medical training, will be in Phase Two of Brigantia, currently under construction and also funded by the Welsh Assembly. When complete, at a cost of £8 million in total, Bangor will have one of the finest academic developments in this leading area of biomedicine in the UK. Professor Roy Evans, Vice-Chancellor, said "This is a major development for the University and for North Wales. It will particularly strengthen the University's links with the NHS and our research and training in biomedicine. It is also yet another outstanding achievement for our 5 star-rated School of Psychology". "We could not have had a better start to 2004 and I am delighted for all our staff who have worked so hard to bring this about" said Professor Fergus Lowe, Head of the School of Psychology. "Winning such recognition and support from the Wolfson foundation and the Welsh Assembly for our research in neuroscience enables us to establish at Bangor a centre of excellence that will be in the forefront internationally for years to come" | |||||||||||||||||||||
