They've got some bottle!
January 07, 2004Psychologists have designed a unique computer-based test that measures nurses' 'bottle' - their ability to make difficult decisions and act on them whilst under pressure.
Dr Raymond Randall and Jonathan Houdmont from the Institute of Work, Health & Organisations, University of Nottingham and Dr Chris Smewing from Interactive Skills, reported on their work today, 7 January 2004, at the British Psychological Society's Annual Occupational Psychology Conference, held at The Stratford Moathouse Hotel, Stratford-upon-Avon.
The computer-based test will be used to assess whether a nurse can make gutsy and difficult decisions in emotionally charged situations. Termed 'Confident Competence' the test examines courage, nerve, initiative and resilience.
The research has been commissioned by the National Health Service University to support the training of a new breed of nurse. Called First Contact Practitioners (FCP), these nurses will be qualified to post-graduate level and they will be expected to perform medical duties in GP surgeries.
The FCP role has been created as part of a major drive to improve access to and quality of care in the NHS. This is a new initiative for the NHS and should start early in 2004.
Confident Competence, the researchers claim, also has the potential to be applied in many other professions that require 'bottle'.
