Highways Agency congratulated for environmentally friendly lightingDecember 01, 2003Lighting that shines in a controlled manner rather than skywards, has resulted in the Highways Agency being congratulated by the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee recently. The Committee praised the Agency for forward thinking, and believes the high pressure sodium lanterns are a step in the right direction to reducing light pollution. The Agency lights approximately 30% of its 9,380 km motorway and trunk roads in England, and is keen to replace all of its lights over the next decade. The Agency maintains, manages, improves and operates the strategic road network in England, which carries 34% of all traffic and 67% of all freight. Mike Smith from the HA's Safety Standard and Research Directorate said: "After the Netherlands, the UK is the most light-polluted country in Europe. The Agency supports a number of projects into reducing light pollution, and is currently running trials to improve environmental impacts of lighting levels at roundabouts." "Environmental consideration is a top priority. We carefully consider the overall environmental impact, energy efficiency and maintenance of lighting installations." Through innovative design techniques the Highways Agency continually aims to balance the needs of road users, the local community and environmental sustainability. | |||||||||||||||||||||
