An active way to boost traffic flow
December 01, 2003A futuristic scheme is to be trialled on the M42 in Birmingham, using a combination of hi-tech traffic management systems, to help smooth traffic flow and reduce congestion.
From summer 2004, a series of innovative tools will start to be integrated as part of the Active Traffic Management project. Helping to provide safer, smoother and more reliable journeys, the new measures will be introduced on the busy motorway between junctions 3a and 7, which links the M40 and the M6.
Electronic signs installed on gantries will make best use of available road space to provide enhanced information to drivers. Variable speed limits will smooth traffic flow and a network of CCTV cameras will enable dedicated operators to monitor traffic.
Other planned features over the next few years include signals on slip roads to regulate traffic flow joining the motorway and dedicated lanes for destination and vehicles types at certain times.
Incident Support Units will assist at accidents and minimise the disruption they can cause.
