Building for the Future
December 01, 2003Providing motorists with real time information on incidents and road delays, the Highway's Agency state-of-the-art National Traffic Control Centre (NTCC) is taking shape.
From 2004, NTCC will play a vital role in the way traffic is managed. Based in the West Midlands, the purpose built centre has been designed to communicate real-time traffic information.
NTCC will gather real time information from across the network, making the lives of road users easier by keeping them better informed and making journey times more reliable.
Roadside equipment is being installed around the network to help gather information. CCTV cameras, weather stations, in-road vehicles and accident detection loops and automatic number plate recognition cameras will be used in conjunction with information from the police, local highway authorities and maintaining agents
NTCC will help reduce congestion and driver stress by keeping motorists up to date both pre-journey and en-route using a website, new telephone service, and the electronic message signs as well as travel news services.
