New Chief Executive Appointed for the European Science FoundationNovember 28, 2003The European Science Foundation, based in Strasbourg, appointed at its Annual Assembly, which took place the 27-28 November, 2003, Professor Bertil Andersson as new Chief Executive for a five year period. Bertil Andersson will be the successor to Secretary General Professor Enric Banda. The new Chief Executive Bertil Andersson (born 1948) is Professor in Biochemistry and he comes from a post as President of Linköping University, Sweden. He has been a member (and chairman) of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry 1989-1997 and he is currently member of the Board of the Nobel Foundation since 2000. Bertil Andersson will take over as Chief Executive from the first of January 2004. After the appointment he said: "We must collaborate on a deeper level than the present international scientific collaboration now achieves. I will facilitate that the worlds best researchers will meet in Strasbourg and make The European Science Foundation a strong and influential organisation. One of the future goals will be to create a European Research Council." From the ESF Assembly the current Secretary General Enric Banda salutes the appointment of Bertil Andersson with the following words: "I have spent a very exciting and rewarding period at ESF. I am sure this will be the case for my successor as well, because the future for European research and therefore for ESF is both challenging and fundamental to the development of research in Europe. European leadership in science and a well-structured collaboration between research organisations are two of the challenges we face if we want to see a Europe of knowledge in place. I know that I leave the future of ESF in good hands and have every confidence, that under Bertil Andersson, the ESF will play a key role in the European Research Area."
