Kingston University MBA Graduate Banks Worldwide AwardNovember 19, 2003A Kingston University Russian graduate has beaten off worldwide competition to be named 2003 MBA Student of the Year. Natalia Buchstaber, who has just completed Kingston's Moscow-based Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme, won the award ahead of three other shortlisted contenders. Run by the Association of MBAs and the Independent newspaper, the competition attracted entries from more than 80 business schools around the globe. Natalia, who graduated with distinction, was nominated for the prestigious prize after finishing a dissertation on inter-bank lending in Russia. Using statistical techniques, she has developed software for a mapping system that allows users to compare the exposure of different banks to risk through on-screen colour coding. Her work was inspired by her experiences during Russia's economic crisis in 1998, when financial problems in her homeland escalated after too much money was borrowed. Russian experts believe Natalia's system is superior to existing risk assessment methods. "Having personally been a victim of the 1998 crisis, I wanted to study the problem of how to estimate credit risk," Natalia said. "When I was told it had led to me being shortlisted for the award, I was very proud and actually winning the award is overwhelming." Natalia is now employed by the Central Bank of Russia where her system is being developed. Parts of her dissertation have also been published in a Russian academic journal. Her success has spurred a number of students working in Moscow's financial sector to sign up for the Kingston course. Despite having a demanding job, Natalia is also teaching and preparing courses for the programme in the Russian capital. The programme's academic director Professor Robin Matthews said Natalia was one of the most outstanding students he had ever taught. "Her contribution to the course has been of the highest order," Professor Matthews said. "Natalia's success in winning the competition is confirmation that Kingston's MBA is right up there with the top programmes in Europe." | |||||||||||||||||||||
