Nerve Centre Opens in Manchester: media invitation

Research which will greatly improve patient recovery from nerve damage following accidents, will take a major step forward with the opening of dedicated laboratories at The University of Manchester on Thursday 13 November at 2.30pm.

The Blond McIndoe Nerve Regeneration Group, formerly based at The Royal Free and University College Medical School, London, relocated to Manchester earlier this year and is now moving into purpose-designed £500,000 laboratories at the University, providing state-of-the-art facilities for more scientists to carry out their pioneering work in this important area. It joins the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Research team, headed by Professor Gus McGrouther, the UK's first Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Led by Professor Giorgio Terenghi, the team of young surgeons and scientists will carry out research which focuses on the development of an artificial nerve made from a biodegradable synthetic polymer. This can be wrapped around an injured nerve, bridging the gap between the two severed ends instead of using stitches and guiding the re-growth of the nerves. This technique will result in greater sensory restoration and motor function for patients.

A clinical trial using this novel method, the first in the UK, will soon begin in Manchester and the pioneering surgery will be performed on patients by Professor McGrouther at Wythenshawe Hospital, providing the opportunity to develop a link between research and clinical application.

Professor Terenghi has joined the University because of its outstanding reputation for investing in and supporting high quality research. The University has close academic and clinical relationships between its Medical School and the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit at the Wythenshawe Hospital (South Manchester University Hospitals NHS Trust).

The relocation to Manchester strengthens the University's reputation as pre-eminent centre of excellence for wound healing. Professor Terenghi, said: "The move to Manchester and the opening of these new first-class facilities are very exciting and will allow us tap into the world-class expertise which exists here and to undertake cross-collaboration in tissue engineering and reconstruction."

The research group is part of The Blond McIndoe Medical Research Centre originally based at East Grinstead, the legacy of the remarkable and gifted plastic surgeon, Sir Archibald McIndoe, best known for his wartime treatment of severely burned air-crew - his "Guinea Pigs." The outstanding fund raising efforts of Neville and Elaine Blond, who were from Manchester and who became great friends of Archibald McIndoe and their family, have spanned the entire history of the Blond McIndoe Medical Research Centre, helping to shape the partnerships between surgeons and scientists of exceptional ability. Members of the Blond and McIndoe families will attend the official opening of the laboratories.

During the last 40 years, the Blond McIndoe Centre has pioneered leading edge techniques such as the first toe-to-thumb transplant, immunology of organ transplantation and tissue typing and improving the success of corneal transplant.
