Prize-winner emerges from the shadowsNovember 04, 2003How can you measure the brightness of light? A book which examines the answers to this seemingly simple question has just won the 2003 Paul Bunge Award, the world's largest prize for research in the history of scientific instruments. The book, published in 2001 by Institute of Physics Publishing, is "A History of Light and Colour Measurement: Science in the Shadows" by Glasgow University lecturer Dr Sean Johnston. The book describes how techniques of measuring light came to be developed first by the human eye and eventually by automated machines, It tells how light and colour came to be important from the late nineteenth century, first for manufacturers and then for a wide range of scientists - including physicists, psychologists and ophthalmologists. The award, which has been given once a year since 1993, is funded by the Hans R Jennermann Foundation is currently worth around 7500 Euros and is given for outstanding contributions to the history of scientific instruments and their application. The award was presented to Dr Sean Johnston in Munich during the opening ceremonies of the annual meeting of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (Society of German Chemists) on 6 October. | |||||||||||||||||||||
