Environment Expert Honoured By International SocietyOctober 02, 2003Professor K. Clive Thompson will receive the 2003 Environment Medal from the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) on the 23 October 2003. The presentation and lecture will take place at SCI Headquarters in London's Belgrave Square, UK. Professor Thompson has a very distinguished career in the environmental field and has been a key figure in the UK water industry. Jeroen van der Veer, SCI President and Vice-Chairman of the Committee of Managing Directors of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies, will present the award. Environmental Medallists are recognised for sustained achievement in the areas of preservation, and improvement or understanding of the environment; something that Professor Thompson is well respected for. An analytical chemist by training, Clive has spent much of his working life in the water industry. He has been a key figure in the UK emergency group for UK water companies and has made invaluable contributions to the development of a major technique, Analytical Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, for quantifying elements in the environment. "It is rare to encounter somebody with his breadth of expertise and knowledge," says Dr Geoff Fowler, Research Fellow at Imperial College, London. As part of the award, Professor Thompson will be giving lecture entitled: Should you believe your analysis results? The importance of fit for purpose environmental analysis. This will be followed by a buffet. The lecture will focus on the increasing number of EC directives and national regulations that specify environmental statutory limits. It is crucially important that all laboratories analysing regulatory samples should obtain consistent results. Clive's presentation will aim to highlight the problems associated with the changes and will provide some potential solutions. | |||||||||||||||||||||
