Large-screen projection in 3DSeptember 18, 2003Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Architecture and Software Technology FIRST in Berlin are voyaging into another dimension when it comes to projection systems. In the living room of the future, a multifunctional, large-format projection screen (1.5 x 2.5 meters) will open up a veritable window to the world. The researchers have developed software that enables the content of different media to be integrated in a single system. 3D and HDTV-format films (High Definition Television), digital television, slide projector shows, video games and 3D architectural scenes can all be shown on a single screen. The various types of content are interactively controlled using a PDA, not unlike the familiar TV remote control. Even if you can't afford to fly to Spain for three weeks' vacation, the system enables you to travel as a virtual tourist, bringing all the sights and sounds directly into your home. Depending on your interests, you can admire three-dimensional simulations of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the old city of Wetzlar, the glass cupola of the Reichstag in Berlin or the Louvre in Paris. The Home Display 2007 system is based on standard projectors and offers superlative visualization. The new software allows images from several projectors to be superimposed, providing a much higher resolution and greater brilliance than conventional systems. Earlier types of 3D projection system with two or more projectors required complex, manual fine adjustment to ensure that the individual images fitted precisely together. With the new software, the system is automatically calibrated and self-adjusting. The result is a low-cost, easy-to-use projection system suitable for use in the home. A surround-sound system is integrated in the visualization environment, providing an even more realistic sensation of "being there". | |||||||||||||||||||||
