Drama students get more at the University of KentSeptember 08, 2003Students choosing to study at one of the country's leading drama departments are to get more than they bargained for thanks to a unique degree programme being run by the University of Kent. From next year, September 2004, students starting the four-year Drama and Theatre Studies course at Kent will be awarded a Master's degree when they successfully complete the course. Director of Drama, Senior Lecturer Gavin Carver said 'At a recent review it was clear that the work students are doing in their fourth year is equivalent to a postgraduate standard and this seemed the best way for us to acknowledge the quality of this work.' Students will spend the first three years of the course exploring everything from Shakespeare to scenography, from farce to feminism, from acting to anthropology, from playwriting to performance art. The pre-vocational fourth year will give them the chance to specialise in, for example, theatre design, directing, radio production, contemporary performance practice or stand-up comedy. Drama at Kent was awarded the maximum score in the most recent Teaching Quality Assessment (TQA) and was awarded 5 out of a possible 5* in the national Research Assessment Exercise. Graduates have gone on to become designers, playwrights, actors, comedians, directors, theatre critics, stage managers, arts administrators, TV schedulers, lecturers and journalists. | |||||||||||||||||||||
