Chemistry & Industry Magazine - cover date 1 September 2003August 28, 2003NEWS Rubella Risk Higher than Thought Women in the UK may be more susceptible to rubella than they think. A Japanese study reported 31 incidences of rubella-related deformities in children born to women who had been vaccinated in their early teens. Women born in the UK before 1988 were also vaccinated only once in their early teens. Since then, a 2-dose regime was introduced: children are now vaccinated twice before pre-school. However, the decreasing levels of MMR vaccination in the UK mean that women of child-bearing age are more likely to come into contact with rubella, according to researcher Shigetaka Katow, who works with the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The decreasing rates of vaccination and the fact that women over 15 in the UK have only have had one shot is putting unborn children at risk. A spokesperson for the Department of Health says that there is a screening programme for women of childbearing age but it is up to the GP to act if he thinks his patients is planning to start a family. Is the West Stifling Scientific Progress? Why did a breakthrough paper describing the successful reprogramming of human cells with rabbit eggs take two years to publish and then only in an obscure Chinese journal. Some scientists say that it is because the west is suspicious of research coming out of countries like China or that some papers are deemed too politically sensitive. FEATURES Electrochemistry Fuel cells are seen as the answer to produce energy with low carbon dioxide emissions. However they are expensive. Does the answer come from biofuel cells that can run on a shot of vodka, gin, wine or beer. Organic Light Emitting Diodes Avecia is developing new materials for use in the latest display technology Drug Discovery The study of the RNA produced in a cell - Transcriptomics - can be used to identify drug targets.
