Media invitation: British Ecological Society Annual Meeting, Manchester Metropolitan University, 9-11 September 2003August 20, 2003Get more from your trip to this year's BA Festival of Science at Salford! You are invited to attend the UK's premier ecological event, the British Ecological Society's Annual Meeting, being held just a mile away from Salford at Manchester Metropolitan University, 9-11 September 2003. Thousands of ecologists from all four corners of the globe will be attending the meeting, which features more than 350 scientific papers and 150 posters, as well as the presentation of the Marsh Award for Ecology and the President's Medal. Hot topics at this year's meeting include: ·The Tansley Lecture, given by Professor Bill Sutherland of the University of East Anglia on Tuesday 9 September. Professor Sutherland will say that prediction needs to be at heart of ecology if it is to address key questions such as the consequences of GM crops and climate change. ·The BES Lecture, given by Professor Alan Gray, on Wednesday 10 September. Looking at studies of gene flow, the effects on non-target organisms, and the impact on farmland biodiversity, Professor Gray will look at how science and risk assessment translate into policy on GM crops. ·What the Park Grass Experiment - the oldest ecological experiment in existence - is telling us about climate change. ·Why do some snail's shells coil to right and others to the left? ·Farming and conservation - which agri-environment scheme works best? ·Saving the UK's birds of prey. ·And, what did the Vikings ever do for us? Unearthing the ecological impact of the Vikings on the Faroe Islands. | |||||||||||||||||||||
