Karolinska Institutet to coordinate EU Network of Excellence

One of the programs within the EU's new commitments to create major networks of excellence to bring together competence will be directed from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. The EU Commission will be allocating EUR14 million over a five-year period.

Professor Jan-Ãke Gustafsson and Researcher Ingemar Pongratz at the Department of Biosciences at Novum, Karolinska Institutet, have been entrusted with the task of setting up an infrastructure among leading European scientists within the program Food Quality and Safety.

EU's Sixth Framework Program prioritizes five research areas, and in each of these special commitments are being made to create Networks of Excellence, networks that are larger than those normally set up in the EU. The aim is to further strengthen and marshal European research in a long-term perspective, in order to make it possible to become a world leader. The goal of the networks is also to have the collective expertise in each constituent field serve as a support for decision-making bodies in the EU.

"It is important that the Karolinska Institutet is now being given the opportunity to show that we can administrate well and can play a major role in large-scale research collaboration in Europe," says Professor Jan-Ãke Gustafsson.

The network in question, with its hub at the Karolinska Institutet, will study unhealthful chemicals in food and bolster research, risk assessment, education, and information about them. A score of research teams in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, Finland, and Sweden, among other countries, will be participating. Issues on the table include pollution that disturbs hormonal balance, such as estrogen-like substances like bisphenol. It is found in paint, glue, and hardened plastic and has been discussed in connection with plastic toys for children. Another important subject is dioxin, which is formed when waste is incinerated. Humans are exposed to dioxins via fatty foods such as fish, meat, and milk, which can lead to cancer, immune defense deficiencies, and reproductive and developmental disorders.
