AHRB Funds £2 Million Of Resource EnhancementsAugust 14, 2003More than £2 million has been made available by the Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB) to improve the availability and accessibility of research materials and resources. A total of 12 awards were made in the latest round of the AHRB's Resource Enhancement Scheme. The awards support a range of projects, many of which will make their results accessible on the internet, to increase the availability of research resources to both academics and a wider public. Projects funded range from the cataloguing and digitising of the private papers of Isambard Kingdom Brunel to creating an online database of Northern Irish Parliamentary Papers from 1921 to 1972. The Resource Enhancement scheme provides awards of up to £300,000 for up to 3 years, with a maximum award of £100,000 in any one year. The scheme is open to full and part-time members of the academic and academic-related staff of Higher Education Institutions. "There is a range of resources in libraries, archives, galleries and studios that are potentially of great value to researchers, and of interest to a wider public but, for a variety of reasons, they are not being used to full effect", explains Professor Geoffrey Crossick, Chief Executive of the AHRB. "Sometimes this is because material needs to be comprehensively catalogued or there is a need to bring together, or to generate information from, different sources to contribute to the intellectual infrastructure of a subject." The AHRB takes an inclusive view of what constitutes research materials and resources. Applicants to the scheme must explain the research value and importance of the resource they wish to develop, the ways in which their project will enhance access and availability, and the contribution that will be made to the research and intellectual infrastructure of subject areas and disciplines. - ENDS - | |||||||||||||||||||||
