University of Kent course run in partnership with modern wonder of the worldJuly 11, 2003The news that Kew Gardens is to join the likes of the Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China as a modern wonder of the world has been welcomed by teachers on the University of Kent's MSc Programme in Ethnobotany. Together with the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology (DICE), the Department of Anthropology and the Royal Botanic Gardens collaborate in offering a unique qualification which over the five years it has been available has obtained UK research council validation and established itself as a world leader. The 16 quota places available have become highly competitive. 'There can be few institutions of higher education that can boast they are working in partnership with a World Heritage Site', said Professor Roy Ellen, who convenes the programme and directs the University's Ethnobiology Lab. The MSc in Ethnobotany is a twelve-month interdisciplinary course which enables students to gain a knowledge of plants and plant ecology in the context of their cultural, social and economic significance. Kew has unrivalled plant collections and botanical expertise, as well as long-standing global involvement with economic botany. The Department of Anthropology at Kent ranks among the highest in its field, with its pioneering approach to research and teaching in ethnobiology and human ecology, while DICE has an international reputation for its work in the study and practical implementation of biodiversity management around the world. | |||||||||||||||||||||
