Media invitation: Insects matter more than everJuly 09, 2003Insects are a rapid reaction force. They evolve, whether following Darwin's ideas on natural selection or in response to changing circumstances, and the integral role they play in our world is changing too. Top scientists from across the globe are coming to Reading, Berkshire in July to share their research on how these changes affect our own health, our food and many other aspects of everyday life. The Royal Entomological Society is hosting its National Meeting and International Symposium to discuss insect evolutionary ecology from July 28 - 31 at The University of Reading. Three lecture rooms will be busy from 8.30 each morning to 7.00pm each evening with speakers from Japan, Australia, Russia, Scandinavia, Western Europe and America. This year's hot topics are insect sex and insect immunity. The former, whether the speakers are discussing sexually transmitted infections among ladybird beetles or mating fights between male fig wasps, is the basis of studying population changes. The latter addresses the problems of alternative methods of controlling insect-spread disease and crop pests. RES entomologists are available to comment and expand on these and other insect topics now and during the symposium. If you want to know more about any invertebrates - and they make up more than 64% of the world's species - please contact us. | |||||||||||||||||||||
