Rotators for the Canaries Large Telescope

June 30, 2003

TEKNIKER has concluded the verification tests on the two Nasmyth rotators which they have designed and constructed for the Large Telescope on the Canary Islands and which, probably over this coming Autumn, will be incorporated at the Grantecan installation.

The two Nasmyth rotators are two son large rotating pieces of almost four metres diameter and six tons weight and which are installed on either side of the telescope tube and which supports the mass of cables which carry the information - as photons - to the devices which carry out scientific analysis. Their function is to rotate with high precision despite the great mass they have to bear (more than two tons of cables and scientific equipment), or the microseismic shocks or the great temperature changes experienced, between night and day, on the heights of the Roque de los Muchachos at Palma. The precision of the rotation is, in fact, a matter of tenths of a second, while, size-wise, the uncertainty should never exceed 6 micras.

The contributions of TEKNIKER to the Canaries Large Telescope, which will be the largest optical telescope in the northern hemisphere, with its primary mirror of 10 metres diameter, are not limited to the rotators: the centre also provided the simulation of the complete mechanical system for the structure's overall design.
