New Director of Research and Innovation at EPSRC

Professor Randal Richards has been appointed as the new Director of Research and Innovation at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. Professor Richards will take up the post on October 1st, taking over from Dr David Clark OBE, who is retiring having been a Director at EPSRC since 1994.

Professor Richards, who is 54, is currently Head of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Durham and Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Polymer Science and Technology. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a former chairman of MacroGroup UK, the pure and applied polymer chemistry group of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He is also a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

"As a leading academic with an intimate understanding of what it means to be undertaking cutting-edge research his experience will greatly assist EPSRC in continuing to develop its support for excellent research across the spectrum and further reinforce its connectivity both to academia and industry".

The Director of Research and Innovation at EPSRC plays a vital role in helping to determine the direction of UK science within engineering and the physical sciences. This is achieved through leadership of a team that seeks new opportunities, supports and fosters leading edge science, and formulates programmes to deliver research and trained people that meet the UK's needs. The role is strategic and outward looking, involving extensive interactions not only with other Research Councils, but also with universities, government and industry.
