Europe leads the world in science communication
June 17, 2003European science communication experts meeting in Poland strongly urge the governments of all European nations to increase their financial and motivational support for science communication events.
EUSCEA, the European Science Events Association, brings together the leaders of Science Festivals and Science Weeks from all over the continent of Europe. Members of the association, experts in the field of science communication, met in Wroclaw, Poland this week to discuss progress in the field.
Science events communicate science in new and often unusual ways, for instance stand-up chemistry at a central station, lectures on physics in an amusement park, guided excursions for schools to laboratories, competitions on the internet and so on. The aim is to emphasise the interest, fascination and importance of science.
Evaluations of these events show a subsequent effect in enthusing and exciting young people and increasing the level of dialogue on scientific issues in the communities they serve. Science Weeks and Science Festivals are thus effective ways of recruiting a new generation of scientists and maintaining European welfare in the future.
EUSCEA is anxious to build on the positive results of this work and deplores any reduction in the resources to do this. Following the 2002 Barcelona declaration that 3% of GDP should be devoted to scientific research, it is essential that funding for science communication events reflects this initiative.
