DEFRA'S Science and Innovation Strategy published

The final version of 'Delivering the Evidence', Defra's Science and Innovation Strategy, was published today. The strategy - previously issued in draft form - comprehensively sets out the science activities the department proposes to carry out during the period 2003 to 2006.

Defra's science minister Lord Whitty said:

"From tackling global climate change through to the socio-economic issues facing the countryside and from waste to the prevention of animal disease, science plays an essential and increasingly important role in Defra's work.

"We recognise that the science we will need in five or ten years time is likely to reflect emerging priorities and new scientific developments, as well as the goals which we are setting in this strategy. That is why I endorse the forward-looking approach that is proposed here, to examine the likely nature of our scientific requirements over the next ten years in order to focus and refresh this Science and Innovation Strategy and to scan the horizon for new opportunities and challenges."

Defra's chief scientific adviser, Professor Howard Dalton FRS, said:

"This is Defra's first Science and Innovation Strategy. Critically, this strategy sets out our vision for science and it identifies the science that is essential in underpinning our current policies for the period 2003-6.

"Sustainable development is the single overarching aim of this Department. As scientists we cannot control what happens but we can make important contributions to how we might facilitate sustainable development through the programmes that we fund.

"This strategy sets out the scientific areas that we plan to develop over the next three years and gives a taste of what the key problems and issues may be in the future."
