Website supports teenagers whose parents have cancer
May 28, 2003Researchers at the University of Sheffield's Academic Palliative Medicine Unit have developed the first UK website to offer advice and support to children who have a parent with cancer. Riprap is an interactive site aimed at 12-16 year olds who are facing one of the toughest times of their lives. The site will be launched at 2pm on 29 May at the Hilton Hotel, Sheffield.
The team at the University conducted research into current services for teenagers who have a parent with cancer and identified a need for an online channel that can act as a friend and adviser for them to turn to in times of uncertainty.
Visitors to the site can access a range of information and support and can ask for advice, which will be answered by experts. They can read or write individual case stories, post messages or use the interactive 'emotion toolbox'. The toolbox allows surfers to explore and understand their feelings, such as being sad, angry, guilty, just curious or even positive.
Professor Sam Ahmedzai, Head of the University's Academic Palliative Medicine Unit and leader of the project says, "This site offers teenagers support and advice during what can be a very lonely and stressful time. People of this age often rely on peer group support, but may find that nobody they know has experienced having a parent with cancer. Some services offer help and information for teenagers who have lost a parent through cancer, but Riprap offers support at any stage when families are living with cancer. The site offers a safe environment for teenagers to share their experiences, explore their feelings, get professional advice and help others."
The development is funded by the New Opportunities Fund, under their 'Living with Cancer' programme.
