Mars Explorers Wanted - No Experience Necessary
May 13, 2003The University of Kent's Electronics Department is offering school pupils an opportunity to learn about robotics and the design of intelligent systems in a three-day residential summer school to be held from 2-4 August.
Walking with Robots will bring together 80 young people on the Canterbury campus to meet and learn from leaders of the robotics education community. They will develop team working skills in designing an intelligent vehicle, find out how difficult it is to control a Mars roving vehicle from Earth, and receive advice about courses and careers in the fields of robotics and the design of intelligent systems.
Rodney Buckland of the Electronics Department says, 'We will be offering 14-18 year old pupils a three-day total immersion in robotics that could set them on course for rewarding careers in fields that are playing an increasingly important part in all our daily lives.'
With the generous support of sponsors including the British National Space Centre, BAE SYSTEMS Ltd, the Open University's Department of Design and Innovation, Robofesta, the Medway Children's University and the UK Space and Planetary Robotics Network, the cost of Walking with Robots has been kept down to £69, including all accommodation and meals.
