Musculo-skeletal injuries common among musicians

Occupationally related pain in joints and muscles are very common among music teachers and musicians, above all among those who play the violin. It is important to learn an ergonomically correct style of playing from the beginning, according to physical therapist Anncristine Fjellman-Wiklund in a dissertation she is submitting at Ume'å University, Sweden.

The dissertation, in the research field of “music medicine,” aims to bring to light knowledge about a proper working environment and ergonomy for music teachers and musicians, above all violin teachers and violinists. Work-related pain in the neck, shoulders, and chest in this group is more common among women than men, and the problems tend to be persistent and to increase with time, according to the Ume'å researcher.

Neck and shoulder complaints are related to both physical and psychosocial factors of the work environment. The positive side of being a music teacher is the interaction with other musicians/teachers/students and the creativity of music. On the other hand, the organization of the job and its objectives are perceived as stressful. The occupational role as either musician or teacher also impacted the perception of health and strategies for managing stress.

Monitoring of muscular activities in the neck and shoulders among string musicians shows that each individual musician can repeat his or her own pattern of muscular activity, but that the pattern differs among the musicians. Training in knowing your own body, a technique with its roots in Tai-Chi, the Chuan tradition, could not affect the pattern in this muscle activity, which indicates that a pattern already incorporated in the individual’s style of playing can be difficult to alter. It is therefore important to teach a proper ergonomic style from the very beginning when teaching music. The music teacher plays a central role as a model to be followed.
