Robot Valley in the M'¤lardalen Valley lands SEK 100 million in growth money
May 02, 2003Robot Valley in the central Swedish valley of M'¤lardalen will receive up to SEK 10 million per year for ten years, a total of SEK 100 million. This growth project is one of the winners in Program VINNVÃ"XT arranged by the Swedish government's agency for innovation systems, VINNOVA.
Program VINNVÃ"XT has been set up as a competition in which all regions in Sweden have been invited to submit proposals for the development of research and innovation systems for growth in their region. One of the requirements is that the region itself must be willing to provide matching funds.
"Robot Valley is a regional center of excellence in the top international echelon. This is an ambitious investment with high growth potential. What's more, regional leaders and the regional research base are extremely strong," says Kaj Klarin of VINNOVA.
"Some of the money is to be used to create increased interest in robotics and to attract students to the region," says Lars Asplund, professor at the Department of Computer Technology at M'¤lardalen University College and project director of the Robocup Academy.
At the Robocup Academy, students from lower and upper secondary schools come to the city of V'¤ster'ås to collaborate with students from the University College's master's students of engineering in programming and constructing robots.
The principals behind Robot Valley are M'¤lardalen University and Ã-rebro University, which both cooperate with their communities and businesses, and both have major research in robot technology.
Within the M'¤lardalen region Robot Valley has the attention of several large industrial interests, such as ABB Robotics, Volvo Construction Equipment, Atlas Copco. In all, 35 companies, three universities and colleges, three municipalities, three county councils, and three county administrative boards have actively participated in the planning of Robot Valley. In order to attain full funding, what is required is full matching funds from the region, specification of what individual players will be participating, active participation on the part of politicians, and an itemization of necessary research contacts.
The other two winners in the VINNOVA competition are Innovations in Borderland, an innovation project in the southern Swedish region of Scania which will be developing cutting-edge competence in the foodstuffs industry, and Uppsala Bio, which is involved in biotechnological research and has come up with innovations in drugs, diagnostics, and medical technology.
