Connector for the flexible set-up of optical communication networks

Setting up low-cost optical communication networks requires suitable interfaces such as plug connectors or couplings which can position optical fibre ribbons with a very fine tolerance. Together with three cooperation partners, the Institut für Mikrotechnik Mainz GmbH (IMM) has developed an MT-compatible plug connector for single mode waveguides at the MT standard. This can be used as a low cost optical interface between a silicon chip with integrated optical waveguides and optical fibre ribbons.

Important components of this plug connector are LIGA positioning structures which place a silicon substrate on which glass fibres are mounted with a very low tolerance of only 1 �m from the guiding pins. Even the smallest axial displacement of a waveguide would cause considerable intensity loss of the signal. The LIGA structures are made of a high-performance polymer so that they also remain in position during thermal and mechanical stress. The MT-compatible ferrule is moulded in one piece from a specially developed epoxide moulding material.

A modified MT-compatible ferrule (6,40 x 2,45 x 3,00 mm3) is used for optohybrids. It is also mounted directly onto the silicon chip. It allows a high-precision passive fibre alignment and can be produced at low cost in large numbers. The joining of fibres and silicon chip ferrules provides for a simple plug-type interface.
